The Boys & Girls Clubs of America traces its origins back to 1860 when Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, and Elizabeth Hammersley, three women from Hartford, Conn., organized the first club. Their vision was to offer boys who roamed the streets a positive alternative.

In 1906, several Boys Clubs decided to come together, leading to the formation of the Federated Boys Clubs in Boston. This marked the beginning of a nationwide movement and the establishment of a national organization.

Over the years, the organization underwent significant changes. In 1931, it became known as Boys Clubs of America. Then, in 1956, it celebrated its 50th anniversary and received a U.S. Congressional Charter.

In recognition of the participation of girls in the movement, the national organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990. This change was accompanied by a charter amendment and renewal by Congress.

In 2006, Boys & Girls Clubs of America proudly celebrated its centennial, marking 100 years of providing hope and opportunities to young people across the country.
