For the founders of Girls on the Run, their mission is to inspire young women and girls to dream big and live well. And they achieve this by encouraging them to run.

Girls on the Run, a non-profit organization celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016, operates in all 50 states. In collaboration with schools, Girls on the Run works with girls in third through eighth grade. The goal is to help girls cultivate self-confidence, foster healthy relationships, and learn about health, all while training to complete a 5K.

Not Just Another Sports Team

While the girls do run, the ultimate goal of Girls on the Run is not to improve times or compete against others. Instead, the organization focuses on teaching the girls to see themselves as part of a team and to empower each other to reach their goals. The time commitment is also manageable, with girls staying after school for 90 minutes twice a week. There’s no need to rush to games or attend early morning conditioning sessions. Additionally, the 5K celebration events are scheduled at family-friendly times, allowing everyone to join in on the fun.

Nurturing Minds, Bodies, and Hearts

Girls on the Run provides coaches with a structured curriculum that covers topics such as bullying, healthy eating, and self-esteem. This curriculum prompts girls to not only think about their actions and emotions but also to engage in open conversations with their peers in a safe environment. At Girls on the Run, everyone’s voice is heard.

All Are Welcome

Girls on the Run encourages girls to complete a 5K in their own way, whether that means running, skipping, or walking to the finish line. Some girls even incorporate cartwheels into their route. However, the program encourages them to set small running goals each week to discover their inner strength.

Making It Accessible

Participating in team sports can be financially burdensome for some families, with registration fees, travel costs, and gear expenses. Girls on the Run strives to make the program accessible to all girls. While there is a program fee, scholarships are available, and certain locations even receive visits from “shoe fairies” to provide necessary gear.

Together, We Achieve

At the end of the 12-week program, girls stand at the starting line of a 5K race, no longer alone. Surrounded by their classmates and peers from other locations, they have a buddy right alongside them. This buddy serves as a guide, cheerleader, and believer in their abilities. Whether the buddy is a parent, relative, coach, or volunteer, every girl is supported.

As these young girls cross the 5K finish line after weeks of training, they feel strong, accomplished, and more confident in handling life’s challenges.
