Where Was Girl Interrupted Filmed?

Girl, Interrupted is a well-known film that was released in 1999. Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Kurtwood Smith, it tells the captivating story of a young woman’s experiences in a mental hospital. But where was this critically acclaimed movie filmed?

Harrisburg State Hospital: The Perfect Setting

For the hospital scenes in Girl, Interrupted, the filmmakers chose Harrisburg State Hospital as their filming location. Located in Pennsylvania, this facility provided the ideal backdrop for the movie. The hospital settings were meant to resemble those of McLean Hospital in Massachusetts.

Filming at Building #22 and the Administration Building

The majority of the scenes in Girl, Interrupted were shot in Building #22 and the Administration Building at Harrisburg State Hospital. Throughout the filming process, the hospital remained active, albeit with a lower patient population than in previous years.

Creating the South Bell Ward of Claymoore Hospital

Building #22 presented a unique opportunity for the production designers. Led by Richard Hoover, a Tony Award-winning production designer, the team renovated 75 percent of the building to create the entire South Bell ward of Claymoore Hospital. They meticulously designed and dressed the ward with authentic late 1960s fixtures, furniture, and even the color of paints used on the walls and ceilings.

Setting the Scene

The production design team didn’t stop at Building #22. They also decorated various areas of the State Hospital campus, including offices in the administration building and the extensive underground tunnels. Furthermore, they landscaped the hospital grounds to match the seasonal changes depicted in the script.

Freedom to Create

Filming at Harrisburg State Hospital provided the filmmakers with incredible freedom and flexibility. The breathtaking landscape and brick architecture served as a perfect backdrop for the story. The hospital became their revolving soundstage, allowing them to build sets according to their specifications and provide weather cover when necessary.

Another Film, Another Location

In 2008, Harrisburg State Hospital was once again chosen as a filming location for a movie called Another Harvest Moon. This time, the film was set in a retirement home and revolved around a main character who had survived a stroke and was learning to adapt to a new way of living.

Harrisburg State Hospital’s rich history and unique architecture have provided the film industry with exceptional settings and opportunities for storytelling. Its versatility and captivating ambiance have made it a favorite among filmmakers looking for the perfect backdrop for their movies.
