Meet the Sensational Girl Behind “Ella Baila Sola”

Late September brought Pedro Tovar a life-changing moment when his mom called to inform him that he had been nominated for a Latin Grammy as a songwriter. Riding high on the success of his band Eslabón Armado, who had recently become the first Mexican regional act to perform on “Good Morning America,” Pedro was delighted but caught off guard. The nominations were for the band’s hit song “Ella Baila Sola,” a romantic ballad featuring Peso Pluma, and were in the categories of song of the year and regional Mexican song. The band was also set to make their first live performance at the Latin Grammys in Sevilla, Spain.

“Ella Baila Sola” is a captivating track from Eslabón Armado’s album “Desvelado,” released in 2023. It tells the story of a beautiful girl dancing alone and has proven to be a formidable contender against three breakup songs by Colombian pop queen Shakira and Grupo Frontera’s cumbia hit with the talented Bad Bunny.

Since its release in March, “Ella Baila Sola” has achieved remarkable success. It reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Global 200 chart, making Eslabón Armado the first Mexican artist to achieve this feat. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song climbed to No. 4, becoming the only regional Mexican song to enter the top 10 since the chart’s inception in 1958. The song has now achieved 21 times platinum status.

Pedro Tovar describes the process of writing “Ella Baila Sola” as effortless and natural. Recently, I had the opportunity to meet Eslabón Armado at the Canyon Crest Country Club in Riverside, where they celebrated their achievements with a game of golf. Pedro, a golf enthusiast himself, showed off his skills on the course, drawing cheers from his bandmates who accompany him whenever they get a chance to travel and write music together.

Eslabón Armado is made up of Pedro Tovar and his younger brother Brian on bass, Ulises González on acoustic guitar and backup vocals, and Damián Pacheco on 12-string guitar. González, who resides in Sacramento, and Pacheco, who hails from Phoenix, fly in periodically to meet with the Tovar brothers and collaborate on their music. While Pedro indulges in a game of golf, González and Pacheco navigate the golf carts around the country club.

Nelly Tovar, the band’s manager and mother of Pedro and Brian, proudly watches her sons as they pose for photos on the course. Nelly and her husband immigrated from Jalisco and Colima, working in landscaping and property management. They raised their children in Modesto and the surrounding towns. Pedro learned to play guitar and started posting videos on YouTube when he was just 13 years old. Brian, at his parents’ urging, learned to play the bass.

In 2017, Pedro founded Eslabón Armado with Brian and their longtime friend Gabriel Hidalgo. The band’s journey took an unexpected turn when Ángel del Villar, the CEO of DEL Records, discovered their YouTube videos in 2020 and promptly signed them. Since then, the band has released three albums, all of which debuted at the top of Billboard’s regional Mexican albums chart. Their success has allowed the family to buy a home in Southern California with a horse ranch, thanks to the earnings from their records.

Pedro Tovar, with his calm and unassuming demeanor, has an incredible talent for crafting love songs that touch the heart. He attributes his passionate lyricism to being born under the tropical sign of Cancer. Pedro finds inspiration in romantic movies like “The Notebook” and loves staying in hotels with ocean views to enhance his songwriting. He says writing heartfelt songs comes naturally to him, as he thinks about the experiences and emotions that people go through.

The Tovar brothers listen to indie music from artists like the Smiths, the Marías, and Clairo. They have also drawn inspiration from the creativity and innovation of controversial hip-hop artist Kanye West. Pedro respects Kanye’s ability to take risks as an artist and admires his Grammy performances. The band’s ultimate inspiration, however, is the late Ariel Camacho, a sierreño icon from Sinaloa. Camacho’s stories of narcos, farmers, and heartsick bad boys ignited a love for romantic music within Pedro.

Tragically, Ariel Camacho passed away in a car accident at the young age of 22 in 2015. Nevertheless, his influence lives on through the new generation of artists who have made corridos and sierreño songs mainstream. Artists like Eslabón Armado, Yahritza y Su Esencia, Ivan Cornejo, and DannyLux specialize in poignant folk songs that reflect the emotional experiences of Mexican American teens.

Peso Pluma, a 24-year-old corrido singer, was brought into the mix of “Ella Baila Sola” to see if he could bring a different dimension to the song. Pedro wanted to test Peso’s ability to deliver a romantic, lovey-dovey song, stepping away from his usual tough-guy persona in his music.

With their first appearance at the Latin Grammys outside the U.S., Eslabón Armado’s reach is expanding. They have plans to perform in Mexico next year, reconnecting with the culture that nurtured their love for music. The Tovar siblings are excited to share songs from their upcoming album, which will feature more upbeat tracks to match the vibrant atmosphere of their live shows.

Pedro Tovar is proud to be Mexican and grateful for the inspiration he provides to young people through his music. He considers supporting his family and doing what he loves to be his ultimate happiness. As Eslabón Armado continues to break barriers and touch hearts with their music, they remain an unbreakable link in the chain of Mexican regional music.
