Last summer, fans of the hit TV show Good Girls were left in shock when NBC unexpectedly canceled the series ahead of its fourth season finale. It was a disappointing blow, especially considering that many viewers were expecting a shortened, final season renewal. The reason for the abrupt cancellation? Finances. However, in a recent interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Retta, who portrays Ruby Hill on the show, hinted that one particular person was to blame for the deal falling apart.
According to Retta, the cast and crew were close to securing a fifth season, but it all fell through because of one individual. She expressed her frustration, saying, “But one person ruined it for all of the cast and crew, and so it’s not back.” Naturally, this news left fans curious about who exactly spoiled their chances of getting another season.

Was it the showrunner, Carla Banks-Waddles? Surprisingly, no. Retta clarified that the culprit was indeed a cast member. She explained that they could not continue without this person because it would have been too challenging to figure out the story if they were absent. Retta even playfully suggested that they could have killed off the character, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
This revelation led fans to wonder which cast member could have been responsible. With the show titled Good Girls and three female leads, it was clear that Retta was not at fault. Could it have been Mae Whitman or Christina Hendricks? Unlikely. Both actresses expressed their disappointment when the show was canceled. Whitman actively campaigned for a renewal, urging fans on Twitter to reach out to NBC. Hendricks, on the other hand, shared how much she enjoyed working with Retta and Whitman, indicating a close bond between them. Retta, being their friend, wouldn’t throw any of them under the bus.
That leaves us with only one actor—Manny Montana. At the time of the show’s cancellation, rumors swirled that Montana, who played charismatic villain Rio, was responsible. Reports suggested that financial and scheduling issues arose with him, causing tension with Hendricks. The alleged strained working relationship drove up costs and ultimately led NBC to back out.

The situation is unfortunate because if Good Girls had continued for a few more seasons, writing Montana’s character out wouldn’t have been too difficult. However, with the plan to wrap up the existing story in the fifth season, it would have been challenging to do so without Rio’s presence. Killing him offscreen would have left the series with no room for further development in the limited eight-episode season, resulting in an unsatisfying conclusion.
Fortunately, the main cast members are doing well despite the show’s cancellation. Retta hosts a show called The Ugliest House in America on HGTV, Whitman has lined up a ’90s-set musical rom-com series for Hulu, and Hendricks has been cast in the Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers, based on Edith Wharton’s final novel. As for Montana, he too is thriving. He has made appearances on Westworld and has been cast in Marvel’s upcoming series Ironheart, alongside Alden Ehrenreich, Anthony Ramos, and Dominique Thorne.
While the season five of Good Girls may never see the light of day, fans can take solace in the fact that their favorite actors are moving forward with exciting new projects.
