The Viral Sensation: Who’s That Wonderful Girl Meme

If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok recently, chances are you’ve come across a catchy sound with the lyrics, “Who’s that wonderful girl? Could she be any cuter?” This sound has taken the app by storm, serving as the perfect background for a variety of videos that revolve around getting hyped up or hyping up others. In these videos, a little green puppet with a pink tiara and wand captures everyone’s attention, while an older orange puppet sings the praises of his three-year-old granddaughter.

Believe it or not, the famous song comes from an old Canadian children’s series called Nanalan, created by Jamie Shannon and Jason Hopley. Premiering in 1999, Nanalan showcased heartwarming moments between Mona and her Nana Bea, the grandmother-granddaughter puppet duo. Most of the show’s episodes take place in Nana Bea’s backyard, which Mona fondly refers to as “Nanalan” or “Nana Land.” Initially starting as shorts, the series expanded into full episodes that were aired on CBC, Nickelodeon, and PBS for Kids.

The song’s recent surge in popularity can be attributed to a TikTok video posted in October. This particular video, featuring the exact clip from Nanalan where Mona’s grandmother sings to her while she enters the room dressed as a princess, garnered nearly 10 million views. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Mona and Nana have gained internet fame. Back in 2016, Nanalan gained attention on platforms like Tumblr and Instagram, albeit for different reasons, mainly centered around its lo-fi quality and surreal plotlines.

On TikTok, the trend has taken a wholesome turn, with users applying the song to scenarios of their daily lives, relationship memes, and adorable cat content. Captions accompanying these videos illustrate why the song is so popular, such as “Me hyping myself up before leaving for class every day” or “Me cheering up my little sister after she got a new outfit.” Additionally, there are boyfriend-centric memes like “My man being extra nice when I’m on my period and he’s actually scared” or “My boyfriend finally coming out of my room when I’m not grumpy anymore.” You get the idea.

Like many trends on TikTok, this one has also taken on a gendered aspect, as noted by Christianna Silva of Mashable. However, at its core, it is a lighthearted trend that is relatable to anyone, and it continues to thrive on the app. Thanks to TikTok, a nearly two-decade-old puppet show has found newfound relevance in today’s digital landscape. With its infectious melody, the “Who’s that wonderful girl” song is bound to stay stuck in our heads for quite some time.
