Text Compatible Gloves: Harnessing Technology for Safety

In this digital age, technology is an integral part of our daily lives. You’re reading this article on a device right now, which proves our point. In various work scenarios, touchscreen gloves provide a solution that empowers workers to use their phones and tablets without compromising their safety.

Understanding the Technology

Touchscreen capability in gloves relies on a combination of factors. Both the glove’s coating and yarn (liner) can contain conductive materials. To ensure consistent conductivity throughout the glove’s lifespan, a conductive additive is used in either the yarn, the coating, or both. The challenge lies in maintaining good conduction as thicker gloves make it harder for the conductive properties to travel effectively.

Touchscreen gloves need to remain compatible even when they get dirty or worn. While the glove liner usually contains the conductive fibres, many glove coatings also possess initial conductive properties due to the presence of Carbon Black content. This content includes a semi-conductive carbon material, which allows coated gloves to function with varying touchscreen compatibility levels. However, as the coating wears away, gloves become less compatible if the yarn does not contain conductive additives.

Factors Affecting Touchscreen Capability

The level of conductivity in gloves depends on the yarn type, coating type, and thickness. Carbonised and copper yarns are popular choices, but they each have their limitations. While carbonised yarns can stiffen gloves, copper yarns can oxidize and lose conductivity over time. Additionally, touchscreen compatibility varies across different phone manufacturers and screen types. For instance, some devices, like newer iPhones and iPads, have higher conductivity requirements, making them less responsive to certain gloves compared to Android devices.

How Do Touchscreen Compatible Gloves Work?

Touchscreen devices function using electricity. Although you won’t get an electric shock when touching your phone, the human skin carries an electrical charge, which forms the basis for touchscreen functionality. The indium tin oxide coating on the phone screen interacts with the positive and negative charges in our skin, enabling us to navigate the device. Since glass, the material used for screens, is a poor conductor of electricity, a conducting material is necessary as a coating. When you touch the screen, a portion of the charge transfers to your finger, and the edge detectors on the screen sense the loss of charge, determining the precise touch area. From typing captions to opening apps, it’s all made possible by this intricate process.

However, regular gloves lack these conductive qualities. They serve as insulation and do not carry an electrical charge.

The Importance of Touchscreen Gloves

The answer is simple: it’s unsafe to remove safety gloves in hazardous environments. A phone call or urgent message is not a valid reason to jeopardize your safety. Fortunately, touchscreen gloves have become commonplace, offering a practical solution. It’s important to invest in quality touchscreen gloves, as inferior options may lose their touchscreen capabilities over time. With the right pair, your touchscreen gloves will retain their functionality throughout their use.

When Shouldn’t I Use Touchscreen Gloves?

Conductivity can also present safety concerns, making touchscreen gloves unsuitable for certain individuals or work sectors. Some jobs may require workers to avoid gloves made from conductive materials for health and safety reasons. The conductive properties of touchscreen gloves could pose a danger to the wearer or cause damage to products and components. In environments where electrostatic discharge poses a risk, ESD gloves with high conductivity standards are necessary. These gloves undergo rigorous testing to ensure minimal chances of sparks from static discharge in highly combustible settings.
