How Does Derek Jeter Break In His Glove

After gingerly pulling a batting glove over his sore right thumb, Derek Jeter had the digit wrapped in athletic tape. If there was any way to play against Boston last night, the Yankees captain was going to try to find a way.

But after a few throws during batting practice, Derek Jeter left the field and headed for the trainer’s room, the last place he wants to be during any game, especially one against the Red Sox.

Boston fans can thank Baltimore pitcher Rodrigo Lopez for most likely keeping Jeter out of the lineup for at least the first game of this four-game series. Lopez drilled Jeter’s right thumb on Sunday with a fastball in the sixth inning.

Jeter arrived at the Stadium yesterday with a compression wrap on the thumb in an attempt to reduce swelling. Jeter met with reporters twice before he left to take batting practice but didn’t have any answers about his playing status.

“I haven’t moved it since they put that wrap on it so it’s hard to tell,” Jeter said. “It’s just like any time you get hit, it’s going to hurt for a while. I haven’t held a ball or bat.

I’ll have more for you in about 30 minutes.” His inability to grip the ball, more than the pain, convinced Jeter after just a few throws that he could not play against the Red Sox.

He never even swung the bat.

“I don’t think it’s an injury where if he plays it’s going to do anything more than hurt,” said Yankees manager Joe Torre. “I don’t think it’s anything that’s going to become an injury.” By the time Torre got through speaking with reporters, Jeter was in the trainer’s room getting ice. Torre said he wouldn’t use Jeter as a pinch hitter and probably wouldn’t use him as a pinch runner.

“I don’t know if I’d like to see him dive headfirst into a base,” said Torre. “But you never know when I panic what’s going to happen.” The only silver lining for Torre was that he expected Jeter to remain in the clubhouse for a good portion of the game last night to receive extra treatment in the hopes of being ready to play tonight. Obviously, it’s a pivotal series, being the Red Sox were a half-game ahead of the Yankees in the AL East prior to last night’s action.

Having Jeter on the bench hurts in more ways than one.

“It’s not a lot of fun because he puts himself next to me and drives me nuts,” said Torre.

Torre posted a lineup without Jeter before BP, hoping he could make a late change.

Miguel Cairo started at short and batted ninth. Jeter has 15 home runs and 68 RBIs versus Boston.

“I know how much he wants to play,” said Torre.
