How Hard Are Boxing Gloves

Boxing is one of the oldest sports known to man, dating back more than 5,000 years. Before boxing gloves were invented, humans would fight against each other with their bare hands and legs, by grappling and wrestling, or by using objects such as swords.

The first modern boxing gloves were invented in 1773 by English champion Jack Broughton, which were only used for training sessions- and the gloves were nicknamed ‘mufflers’ due to the lack of sound made by a landed punch!

In the boxing community, one of the most frequently asked questions is, do boxing gloves make you hit harder?

In this article, we will provide the answers to some of the most commonly searched questions about boxing gloves.

Do boxing gloves make you hit harder?

Plenty of people wonder, do boxing gloves make you hit harder?

Well, let’s take a look at what the function of boxing gloves is.

Boxing gloves offer protection to the entirety of the hands and wrists of a boxer, thanks to the cushioned surface and padding of the gloves. This means the boxer can punch as hard as they can, without worrying about their hands getting injured after every punch.

When you land a punch with your bare fist, you carry the risk of breaking all the bones in your hand. This risk significantly reduces when you wear boxing gloves because the gloves add a barrier between the hand and the place where you are punching (this could be a punch bag, focus pad, or your opponent’s head or body).

Knowing that your hands are fully protected inside a glove, wouldn’t you want to land every punch as hard as you possibly can, using all your power?

Yes, absolutely, because the boxing gloves give the boxer more confidence to throw harder punches, without having to worry about injuring their hands.

What size boxing gloves should I get?

Boxing gloves are not measured in sizes ranging from small to extra-large. Rather, boxing gloves are measured by weight, usually in ounces.

For example, for a 12oz pair of gloves, each glove will weigh 12 ounces.

To work out which type of boxing gloves you need, read this handy chart below:

Size of glove Suitability 4oz For children aged 4 to 5 years old. 6oz For children aged 5 to 7 years old. 8oz For children aged 7 to early teens. 10oz Thinly padded glove, ideal for light pad work. 12oz Slightly more padding, good for pad work & bag work. 14oz An all-round training glove, good for pad work, bag work and light sparring. 16oz A protective glove, good for pad work, bag work and hard sparring.

If the boxing glove you choose is too tight, then size up.

If the gloves are too roomy, then size them down.

Do bigger hands mean harder punches?

Some boxers naturally have bigger hands than their competitors or other fighters in their weight class.

However, having bigger hands does not necessarily mean the punches will be harder.

To land a powerful punch, you will need to have the proper form and correct technique, so you can control the force of your punch. You also need excellent balance and coordination to deliver hard punches, so hand size has nothing to do with these!

What increases punching speed?

There are different methods you can use to improve your hand speed.

After all, fast hands will help you in boxing, as you need speedy reflexes and the ability to throw quick punches when you are in front of your opponent.

To increase your punching speed, try these hacks below:

  • Incorporate exercises in your workout routine that focus solely on speed- for instance, shadow boxing, training with a Speedball, and footwork drills.
  • Do some medicine ball throws, which will help you improve the speed at which you move your arm.
  • Wear weighted gloves when practising punches, to help you get used to the motion of punching, so you can perform the move quickly once the weighted gloves are off.
  • Train with a skipping rope and jump as quickly as you can, which will prepare you for being fast on your feet.
  • Practise punching on a heavy bag, and doing different combinations. The more you practise on a heavy bag, the faster you will get at landing those punches.

Can I use MMA gloves for boxing?

No, you must never use MMA gloves for boxing- whether that’s on a punchbag, punch pads or a boxing dummy (body opponent bag). You could severely damage your knuckles, wrists and wrists, and seriously injure your opponent if wear MMA gloves while boxing.

That is because MMA gloves are small, lightweight and open-fingered, which allow the fighter to perform grappling techniques and submissions.

MMA gloves have thinner padding than boxing gloves, so they won’t absorb punches as easily. Some MMA gloves do not come with longer wrist straps, so you won’t have that wrist support needed for boxing training.
