The criteria for the Premier League’s Golden Glove award needs to be revised. Since its inception during the 2004-05 season, the award has been given to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean-sheets in a season.
In my view, this award is not necessarily a reflection of how superb a goalkeeper was throughout the duration of the season. It is rather more of an elitist award for goalkeepers from so-called top six clubs to compete for.

Since the inception of the award, award recipients have come from Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal. Petr Cech and Joe Hart jointly hold the record for most Golden Glove awards with four each.

Nobody can deny that Cech who retired recently has been one of the greatest keepers during the Premier League era. It is a pity that he retired at the age of 36-years when he could have still had a lot to offer the game as a player for another few more years. Whether Hart was truly a world-class keeper is up for debate. After he was deemed surplus to requirements at City following the arrival of Pep Guardiola in 2016, he had less than successful spells with Torino and West Ham on loan. His loan spell with Torino was not renewed and his spell with West Ham also ended on bitter terms and was not extended after a series of high-profile errors.
Hart is currently on the books of Burnley as a back-up behind Nick Pope. There is simply no questioning that Hart and Cech would not not won the award had they been playing for a club outside the so-called top six, the same applies to the other players who have won the award namely Pepe Reina, Edwin Van Der Sar, Wojciech Szczesny, Thibaut Courtois and David de Gea.
Despite being hailed as one of the best keepers in the Premier League for quite a while, de Gea has actually only won the award once which came during the 2017/18 season, such reflects the flawed nature of the recipient selection.

The award for last season was a contest between Liverpool’s Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson with the former prevailing. Both were superb in goal for their respective clubs last season. However, it was rather unfortunate that the likes of Lukasz Fabianski and Neil Etheridge were overlooked for the award and not even be under consideration. Fabianski was superb in goal for West Ham last season and had the most amount of saves with 140 by quite a distance. Etheridge came second with 127.
Etheridge who plays his international football for the Philippines made the second highest amount of saves last season as well as the most penalty saves of any keeper in the league with three.
The selection process for the award needs to be refined to give all keepers equal opportunity. In addition to clean-sheets,it should also take into consideration ration of shots saved to total shots handled, penalty saves, ball distribution and sportsmanship (i.e compliance with non-time wastage and amount of yellow card red-cards received).
