How Leather Gloves Are Made

Leather gloves have been in existence for a long time and are one of the most popular means of hand protection. This guide will take you through a quick summary of how the actual production occurs on a factory floor.

1) Measurement:

Before any gloves can be produced, the first step involves tracing out different styles of gloves on a piece of graph paper. Each glove will have various components.

For example, a regular leather driver glove involves various components which consist of:

i) index and pinky finger with palm as one piece

ii) the middle finger and ring finger,

iii) a separate thumb piece,

iv) the four back fingers as one piece.

The more the components the higher the price of the glove because a single pair will require a greater amount of leather to be used. This is why dress gloves tend to be much more expensive than safety gloves because due to their design and look, dress gloves tend to have many more individual components which lead to higher cost of production.

2) Cutting:

Based on the patterns that are traced out the leather is then cut using different patterns for different gloves. This is usually done using a machine called a cutting machine. Manufacturers identify something known as a cutting average which determines how much leather will be utilized per pair. A lower cutting average means that the glove is cheaper because less leather is used for 1 per pair versus gloves with a higher cutting average. Cutting average will also depend on the number of components hence gloves with many components will have a higher cutting average and will tend to be more expensive than gloves with lower cutting averages.

3) Sewing:

The different components of the glove are then stitched together using sewing machines. During the sewing phase, the inner lining of the glove is also added as well as additional features like welts and protective thermoplastic rubber on the back of the hand for added protection. Welts are small pieces of leather added on the palm side to enhance the durability of the glove. Gloves are stitched together inside-out to give the gloves a better aesthetic look so that the stitching is not visible on the outer side.

4) Finishing:

This process involves turning the gloves the right side up either manually or using a machine called a glove turning machine which can do this quickly. Once the gloves are turned the right side up, they are then further shaped by placing them on a glove shaped iron that makes the glove fit better. Finally the top of the finger tips are gently hammered to give more shape to the finger thereby ensuring a comfortable fit for the end user.
