Does that really come from a cow? Hamburgers or a steak are not the only products cows are used for. There are many byproducts that come from a beef or dairy cow. A by-product is a product made from another part of the cow such as the hide, bones, hooves or other parts of the body.

Farmers raise cows on farms, ranches and dairies
Our farm is a small family owned farm while many farms are run by big corporations. On our farm our animals get the best of care, because they are our lively hood. If we don’t take good care of our animals we cannot sale them, and if we can’t sell them we don’t get paid.
Farming is a busy and hard way of life with many challenges. We battle the weather, bugs, rising cost of production, and many other things. We work hard with the hope for good prices when we sell the products we produce. But to us farming is our way of life and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
A little about our farm
I love farming and enjoy the animals and the crops we raise. Yes I admit I do get emotionally attached to some of the animals I raise. That is why I have a 17 year old goat named Grandma Cookie and had a 15 year old rooster named Harold. Some of my animals just retire here.
Declining family farms
With the decline of family farms many people have stepped away from small town living and have moved to the city. They have forgotten the importance of farming and where their food comes from.
That mouth watering steak or tasty hamburger, fresh from your BBQ grill is not the only product produced from a cow. When ask where the food we eat comes from old and young alike answer “The Grocery Store.” People have forgotten where their food really comes from.

But where does your food come from before the grocery store? It comes from ranches and farms like ours. Not only beef but every product you eat comes from a farm, ranch or dairy, unless of course you have produced it yourself.

These products are enjoyed daily by many. Chewing gum, gummy bears and other gummy candies, marshmallows, shortening, butter, ice cream, canned meats, gelatin deserts, jello, sausage casings, milk, meat, chocolate, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream and yogurt just to name a few. In the meantime as you enjoy that big glass of milk with cookies remember they are also made with dairy products produced from a cow.
The bones, horns, and hooves of the cow also supply important by-products for buttons, bone china, piano keys, glues, fertilizer, and gelatin for photographic film, paper, wallpaper, sandpaper, combs, toothbrushes, and violin strings.
Leather seats and other car products
Would you have ever thought these products were produced from a cow? These products include leather, leather car seats, felt, ointments, binders for plaster and asphalt, base for insulation material used to cool and heat your house, paint brushes, and candles. Industrial oils and lubricants, tallow for tanning, fatty acids in the production of chemicals, biodegradable detergents, pesticides, and flotation agents and some fatty acid are used to make automobile tires run cooler and, therefore last longer are also included in this long list of products.

By using one cow hide the following sports products can be made:

- 12 basketballs
- 18 volleyballs
- 8 soccer balls.
Pharmaceutical products many lives depend on
There are more than 100 individual drugs that use various parts of the cow. For instance this may include drugs such as steroid drugs, heparin, osteoarthritis drugs, collagen for plastic surgery, controlling anemia, hay fever and asthma drugs, and insulin for the diabetics.
In addition it requires the pancreases from 26 cattle to provide enough insulin to keep one diabetic person alive for a year. In addition surgical sutures are another important byproduct from a cow. This product comes from the intestine of a cow.
Cosmetics and other products
The cosmetic industry uses byproducts from cows to produce soaps, lipsticks, shaving cream, deodorant, nail polish remover, makeup, cosmetics, toothpaste and also face and hand creams. Products contain stearic acid and fatty acids use byproducts from a cow.
Pet products also include beef byproducts such as dog food, cat food, rawhide bones and hooves.

Other miscellaneous items using beef byproducts include laundry pre-treatments containing enzymes, antifreeze, car wax, brake fluid, saddle soap, leather jackets, belts, shoes, gloves, office chairs, leather furniture just to name a few.
A lot of hard work, time and effort goes into each of these products.
Now for the answer on the list. If you guessed number 36 bacon on the list you were right. A pig produces bacon. The cow produces everything else on the list. Hard to believe but true! Cows are a necessity to all of us to create many products and even luxuries like shoes!
