WASHINGTON – Cincinnati Reds catcher Chuckie Robinson was promoted to the big leagues last week, and he already belongs to a small MLB fraternity.
Robinson is one of the very few Major League players who doesn’t wear batting gloves.

Fox Sports counted 11 players last May who didn’t regularly wear batting gloves, and one of them was a pitcher. About half of the remaining 10 players are longtime veterans like Matt Carpenter (New York Yankees), Stephen Vogt (Oakland A’s and Wil Myers (San Diego Padres).
“I think when I was younger, I put them on here and there,” said Robinson, who hit a single in his MLB debut on Aug. 24. “Ever since high school and college, not really. I just like the feel of the dirt and bat is all.”

There are some hitters who will walk to the plate sans batting gloves for a couple of games, but they always return to wearing them. Batting gloves provide a better grip, which is why about 99% of the league wears them.
“My whole career, I’ve never used batting gloves. But if gets too cold out there, though, I’m not too proud to throw them on,” Robinson said, smiling. “If it’s super cold or it’s wet, I’ll throw them on. If it’s normal conditions, no BGs.”
Joey Votto is one player who typically won’t wear batting gloves at the beginning of spring training as a way to toughen up his hands for the grind of a season.
“I’ve got some rough hands,” Robinson said. “Like really rough hands. I feel like I’ve got one big callous on my hand. People make fun of my hands sometimes.”
There have been teammates over the years who watched Robinson hit without batting gloves and attempted to do it during batting practice or one game.
“Here and there, you’ve got some guys try it and mess around,” Robinson said. “Then they are like, ‘I don’t know how you do that.’ It’s just a comfort thing for me.”

It was a difficult year for Schrock, who had a stellar spring training, but injured his calf a few days before Opening Day. He played in just 13 games with the Reds this season.
Jose Barrero sets club record for consecutive games with a strikeout
Jose Barrero has struck out in all 23 games he’s played this season, including a game when he came off the bench and received one at-bat.
It’s the longest strikeout streak by a Reds hitter in franchise history, surpassing Wily Mo Pena’s 21-game streak with at least one strikeout in Sept. 2005, according to Baseball-Reference. It’s the longest single-season strikeout streak since Matt Chapman struck out in each of his first 24 games to begin the 2020 season.
The longest strikeout streak in MLB history, according to Baseball-Reference, belongs to New York Yankees star Aaron Judge, who struck out at least once in 37 consecutive games in 2017.
Reds injury update: Albert Almora Jr. moving closer to return
Reds outfielder Albert Almora Jr., sidelined with a right shoulder contusion after an attempted diving catch in Pittsburgh, is eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, but it could be a few more days before he’s ready to play.
Almora was throwing and hitting off a tee in Cincinnati over the weekend.
