Gadbury, owner of the Reno County Boxing Academy, said the Golden Gloves state tournament will draw boxers and their families from all over Kansas.
“We are hoping to see 300-500 friends, family and fans attend the event,” Gadbury said. “We went the extra mile this year as far as advertising, and we were also able to get some awesome sponsorship opportunities from local businesses.
“In our area, the State Golden Gloves shows consistently brings in a crown of around 500 fans, and 15-20 tournament entries. However, by all metrics, those numbers are on the rise. In the next couple of years, KO Golden Gloves is hoping to double the amount of tournament entries out of Kansas. Local gyms such RCBA, Alley Boxing. KO Boxing, Villa Boxing and Hernandez Boxing each have a strong stable of competitors that will be turning 18, therefore opening the door for more participants.”
Gadbury said the state tournament could bring in some tourism to Hutchinson.
“The state show is normally a two-day event, held on a weekend, so the opportunity to visit many tourist attractions are limited,” Gadbury said. “However, things are in the works for a three-day event in October, and the hope is that we can grow that event into a seven-day ranking tournament within a few years. If and when that happens, it could be a good time to tour the city and some of the things that it has to offer.”

Gadbury said the tournament also provides boxers, family, friends and fans hotel and dining out experiences in Hutchinson.
“Wwe have partnered with Fairfield Marriott to provide a discount to any competitors needing lodging while in town competing in the tournament,” Gadbury said. “As for dining out, several local eateries, such as the POLO Bar and Grill, along with Hickory Stix Barbecue have sponsored the event, so we are sure to advertise their menu and steer people in the direction. Show your Golden Gloves flyer at the POLO Saturday night and receive a discount on your meal.”
Gadbury said there will two boxers from the Reno County Boxing Academy returning to the Golden Gloves State Tournament from last year — Tyris Chapman and Jacob Cox.
“Last year, Tyris was the 125-pound Kansas Golden Gloves winner,” Gadbury said. “He lost his next match at the regional event, but he is excited to give it another go. Jacob Cox will be making his return also. Last year, Jacob made it to the semi-finals of the Golden Gloves Nationals before losing a close split decision to a tough opponent. He ended up taking third in the nation, which isn’t bad at all.”
Gadbury said many current and former world champions have came through the Golden Gloves.
Past fighters such as Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were National Golden Gloves winners in the early 1980s.
There are several fighters to come out of Hutchinson that had great success in the Golden Gloves Tournament as well.
