It’s not like mattress delivery drivers work for a pizza guy’s salary which is so low that they wouldn’t be able to survive without tips. So, maybe you shouldn’t tip them? But then again, their work is more difficult than that of a pizza guy. So, maybe you should? While the decision will inevitably fall onto you, you should know whether the delivery drivers expect any tips in the first place. And then, of course, how much.

Do you tip mattress delivery guys?
Short answer: it depends.
To get this answered right off the bat — mattress delivery drivers don’t expect tips. They are like USPS or UPS workers which means they get paid by the hour and their salary isn’t calculated with tips in mind.
That out of the way, I need to point out that their work is different from that of a UPS guy if it’s a part of white glove delivery. In that case, they actually enter your home and do the kind of heavy lifting you’re unable to do yourself.
It doesn’t really matter to delivery guys if you paid for your white glove service or if it was free of charge. They have a fixed salary and that’s totally unrelated to what you might have paid when you purchased your mattress.
This leaves the tipping completely in the hands of the person receiving the service. There’s no consensus on the matter, just what feels right.
Tipping mattress delivery drivers doesn’t even cross the mind of a lot of people, especially if they already paid for white glove delivery. At the same time, others feel obligated to pay at least $10 or $20 each (there are usually two workers), no matter how much or how little work they did.
But since you’re one of those who did stop to think about tips, read on for all the specifics of what’s appropriate.
When to tip for mattress delivery
Although the tip isn’t mandatory, it’s always appreciated; especially if the delivery was in any way difficult or if the workers went above and beyond.
White glove delivery (in-home setup)
If you’re not getting a simple mattress-in-a-box dropped in front of your door, but rather the whole shebang – having it actually opened up, taken upstairs, around narrow corners, and placed on a bedframe – you might want to tip the mattress delivery guys. This “extra” delivery service is called white glove delivery and it includes all the hard work that goes between dropping off the mattress and the moment it’s ready to be slept on.

If tipping mattress delivery drivers seems like too much for a service you’ve already paid for, you can withhold your tip unless you see that they are really going the extra mile in treating you decently and providing good service by respecting your home, walls, decorations, and your new mattress.
Oversized mattresses
If the two guys are working up a sweat trying to get your new Texas King size mattress inside a not-so-big bedroom, don’t you think they deserve a pat on the shoulder in the form of an Andrew Jackson or two?
Anything bigger than the standard Queen size mattress deserves a tip. After all, it’s not too much to spare some change after you’ve just spent over $2,000 on a mattress.
If delivery is complicated
Anything that makes the delivery guys work extra calls for a special thank you. Third floor, narrow hallways and staircases, tight spaces and corners, and honestly, if you were not being helpful.
Most delivery and mattress companies require customers to remove any objects that could be in the way of delivery drivers. But sometimes you don’t have the time, or maybe you have a bad back and can’t make accommodations, for example. If your situation at home is making it hard for the delivery people, it would be a nice gesture to tip them.
When shouldn’t you give a tip for mattress delivery?
While the three situations from above are in favor of tipping mattress delivery drivers, there are at least two in which you most certainly shouldn’t.
If they drop the mattress off in front of your house
If they do literally as much as the USPS or any other delivery service, you should tip them as much as you tip those other delivery drivers – nothing. That is, unless you regularly tip every delivery driver who brings any bulky item to your doorstep, which, though unusual, would still be nice.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re home at the time of delivery. No tip whatsoever is necessary when all they do is drop the thing off.
Bad customer service
You shouldn’t give a tip if the customer service provided was subpar. Let’s face it – not all delivery drivers are doing a good job and not all companies have good logistics.
This is how some people ended up with a rude mattress delivery guy, others had to wait for much longer than the promised window of time, and some got super annoyed while watching their delivery guy rush through the setup instructions of their new smart bed, only to leave without setting it up properly. If they don’t carry the mattress to where they were supposed to or fail to honor their part of the deal in any way, that’s poor service.
Bad reviews are real and bad service happens. These people do not deserve a tip from you.
How much should you tip mattress delivery drivers?

Most people who decide to tip go with $10 to $20 per person. I’ve noticed that $20 is the sum agreed upon by most customers as a good tip for good service.
If they had to work more, like take it up to the third floor, or make an extra effort around tight spaces, the tip should be about $30 per person. Anything above that would be considered a very generous tip.
Of course, tipping should be in accordance with what you can afford. A $5 tip is still highly appreciated and can make a difference in the driver’s day. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed if all you can afford is a small tip or no tip.
If you want to be extra nice, you can offer them some water, a cold drink, or any other refreshments. Some delivery drivers have a tight schedule and can spend only a certain amount of time per household, so a free drink goes a long way on a hot day.
Do mattress delivery drivers expect a tip?
They don’t.
They might hope to get a tip though because every little bit helps. With close to the minimum wage ($13-20 per hour) and long hours, it means a lot.
But it isn’t like they will be staring at you until you fold and hand them some cash.
Some people said that their delivery driver was surprised to receive a tip and others said that the driver declined tips when offered. However, these situations are rare. Most delivery drivers are more than happy to receive a little bit of help and they highly appreciate it. Scrolling through some forums, I even found delivery drivers who specifically said that their best tip is a can of soda.

Conclusion
Although tips for delivery service aren’t standardized like in the restaurant industry, it’s the compassion and manners that makes a lot of people wonder how much is appropriate to tip your mattress delivery drivers.
Although they get paid by the hour and don’t necessarily expect a tip, it’s nice to offer them refreshments and a bit of cash as a token of appreciation for their hard work. Most people pay $20 each, but this amount might be smaller if they didn’t have much to do, or higher if the delivery guys had to do extra work. However, if they fail to do their part properly, you are absolutely not wrong to skip the tip.
