How Much Wool To Knit A Pair Of Gloves

Table of Contents

As the weather continues to be chilly, it’s time to get stitching this fingerless gloves knitting pattern – they’re super quick to make and even better, this one is totally free!

Using Prima’s Aran yarn, this fingerless gloves knitting pattern knits up in next to no time – much faster than finer 4-ply glove patterns. It’s a chunkier and more cosy yarn which will be much warmer than the fiddlier patterns out there that use thinner yarns. Easy-care, this yarn is washable in a machine so another great reason to knit this fingerless gloves knitting pattern as a gift – they can just bung them in the washing machine whenever they need without a second thought.

Starting at the cuff and working upwards towards the fingers, this fingerless gloves knitting pattern starts off with a rib on a smaller needle. A rib is a type of stitch that creates vertical columns of knit and purl to create an elasticated fabric – perfect for keeping your wrists cosy.

Rib stitch is very simple – all you need to do is knit the knits and purl the purls. For this rib, knows as a 2 x 2 rib, it’s essentially knit two, purl two. Just remember to move your yarn between your knitting needles when moving from knits to purls – if you accidentally jump over the needle, you’ll find yourself with extra loops.

You can make your ribbed cuff as long or short as you want – just keep knitting more rib rows if you fancy them a bit longer.

For the ribbed cuff of this fingerless gloves knitting patter, you’re best to go for a nice stretchy cast-on. We like the cable cast-on method, where you cast on the first stitch knitwise and then every following stitch is worked by making new stitches from between the previous two. It’s a lovely robust edge that holds its shape really well over time.

The knitting of the fingers might seem a bit fiddly, but follow the pattern and you’ll have them done in no time. Knitted flat on straight needles, you will be sewing-up the seams for each of them – and each glove will have a longer seam which we’ve placed on the underside of your wrist to keep the top of your glove looking smooth.

You’ll want to have a go at mattress stitch to sew if the seams, if you’ve not tried it already. It really is a great stitch – if done correctly you shouldn’t notice there’s a seam there at all.

For fabulously well-fitted fingers, we’ve swapped you back to a smaller needle to make each of them. Most knitting patterns will work edgings and stretchy bits (like the cuff, with these gloves) on a tighter needle, which is why you’ll often need two sets of needles for some patterns, including this one.

For the thumb and one other finger, we’ve said to put the stitches on a holder and come back to them later. You really don’t have to buy stitch holders for this, you can thread your stitches onto a waste piece of yarn instead, which in fact can be a little easier to handle. If you do go for stitch holders, get little ones, or even go for a big safety pin. It’s only a few stitches you’ll be setting aside at a time so you won’t need a big one.
