How Often Should I Wash My Gym Gloves

There are various types of gloves which can be very useful depending on what kind of exercise your are doing. If you are training for strength or muscle gains, weight lifting gloves can help to support your wrists when lifting heavy weights, protect your hands from blisters and calluses, and can also give you better grip so that you always maintain proper form.

If you are into combat sports, boxing gloves and MMA gloves will protect your hands, knuckles and wrists when you are training, enable you to hit the bags and pads harder, and will enable you to spar with your opponents safely.

Despite all these benefits, there is one problem with gym gloves; they can get very dirty, very fast. Dirty workout gloves can really start to smell and if you don’t clean them and take care of them properly they can become mouldy and start to come apart.

To save all you fitness freaks from smelly workout gloves (and stinky hands!) here are the best ways to keep your gloves clean.

Rotate a few pairs of workout gloves

Everyone knows that to see the best results from your workouts, you need to be consistent with your training. This means hitting the gym at least every other day, so you should always have more than one pair of workout gloves. This way, while one pair of gloves is drying, you can wear another pair to the gym.

Workout gloves are not expensive so find a few of pairs with a quality grip, and which offer the right support. The less you wear your gloves, the less they will smell, so the more pairs you have, the better.

Wash your weightlifting gloves by hand

It is always worth taking the time to wash your weightlifting gloves by hand so that you can do a thorough job. You don’t need any special equipment or cleaning products. Just fill your sink with warm water and soap and you will be able to get most workout gloves fresh and clean. If you have sensitive skin, use soap with no alcohol because it won’t irritate your skin.

Fill up your sink with water, add soap and soak your workout gloves for a few minutes. You can then start to hand wash the sweat and dirt from the outside of gloves with your hands, paying particular attention to the nooks and crannies around the fingers, palms, and velcro straps.

Clean gloves provide significantly better grip so take your time and wash each glove thoroughly and make sure you change the water in the sink if it becomes too dirty.

Turn your gloves inside out

Once you have the outsides of your workout gloves nice and clean, you will then need to turn them inside out. You can use the same routine for the insides with warm water and soap, but you should take more time to really give them a thorough clean. Massage the soap right into the lining of each glove, rinse it with clean water, and then repeat.

Workout gloves absorb a lot of sweat during a heavy session and you will need to massage all of this sweat out of the glove fibres to stop prevent a bad smell. Once the insides are clean, rinse the gloves with clean water to get rid of the soap and hopefully get rid of any bad odour.

Let your gloves air dry

You should never dry your workout gloves in the tumble dryer because the heat can melt them or cause the stitching to come apart. This can ruin the support and grip and could potentially even lead to injuries.

The best way is to air dry your gloves by hanging them out on your washing line. Air drying will help them to dry more quickly and will also freshen them up and stop them from smelling. While you let them air dry you can wear your other gloves, rotating them every few days.

If you notice that your gloves are still smelling, try adding some baking soda to the water next time. The baking soda will help to get rid of the bad smell and also protect your skin by killing harmful bacteria.

Clean the outside of your boxing gloves

If you are into boxing, Muay Thai, or another combat sport, you will need to keep your leather boxing gloves clean. This can be very difficult because you can not soak them as you do with weightlifting gloves. If you are careful with leather gloves and look after them properly, they will last a long time.

The first thing to do is to wipe the outside of your boxing gloves with a clean, damp cloth at the end of every session to remove the sweat and grime. Leather will not absorb moisture so they just need a quick once over.

After that, all you need to do is wipe the outside of each glove with a clean, dry towel.

Soak up the moisture inside your boxing gloves

Our hands sweat a lot when we are doing combat sports and this can really make your boxing gloves smell. It is not possible to turn boxing gloves inside out, and you cannot soak the leather in the sink, so instead you will need to soak up as much moisture as possible from inside.

Different people use various methods but stuffing them with tissue or newspaper can help to soak up the sweat. Make sure you squeeze the paper right into every nook and cranny of your gloves so that you can greatly reduce the amount of moisture still inside.

Spray the inside of your gloves

Once you have soaked up all that sweat, you will then need to spray the inside of your boxing gloves with a deodorising spray or a solution of half vinegar and half water. This will help to neutralise the bacteria and get rid of bad odours. Open the velcro straps or untie your gloves and leave them to air dry.

You should avoid drying leather gloves in direct sunlight because this can make the leather crack. There are special machines in some gyms that dry boxing gloves with hot air but this can actually make the odour worse. Leave them to dry naturally and they will be in peak condition for every training session.

Wear hand wraps when training

When your wear gloves for combat sport training, you should also wear hand wraps. These provide extra wrist support, protect your hands and fingers, and enable you to punch harder. They are also very effective, however, in helping to keep your boxing gloves odour free. When you wear hand wraps for combat training, all of your sweat will be absorbed into the wraps rather than the glove lining.

Wash your hand wraps once a week

Washing hand wraps is super easy and can either done by hand or in the washing machine. When machine washing or drying your wraps, roll them up first so they don’t get tangled up with your other clothes or around the washing machine or dryer drum. You don’t need to wash your wraps after every session. Just hang them up in the sun to dry after training and they won’t smell bad for at least a few days.

Don’t leave dirty workout gear in your gym bag

Your gym bag can be a very moist environment when it is full of sweaty workout clothes and equipment. You should always empty your gym bag as soon as you get home from the gym and wash your towel, gloves and other clothes immediately.

Weightlifting gloves can become mouldy if you leave them in your bag so after a few uses you should wash them and use your spare pair. You may even want to consider running the bag itself through the washing machine every now and then to get rid of bad smells.

Why cleaning your gloves is so important

As well as preventing bad odours, cleaning your gloves is very important because it will stop bacteria from developing inside. This can cause various skin problems and also make the odour worse. Regular will also help to keep them in condition and ensure that you won’t need to buy new ones for a long time.

The big takeaways

Workout gloves provide fantastic wrist and hand support and can help to improve every aspect of your performance in the gym. When your gloves start to develop a bad odour, it can be very tempting to just toss them in the washing machine. You won’t be able to kill all the bacteria or get all of the grime out of your gloves like this and you may even damage them. Get into the routine of washing your gloves by hand after every few workout sessions and you will keep them clean and in peak condition.
