Lucas Glover Secures Victory at FedEx St. Championship

By Analyst

Lucas Glover, a seasoned golfer, emerged triumphant at the FedEx St. Championship on Sunday after a gripping one-hole playoff. The 43-year-old displayed remarkable composure as he sank an 8-foot par putt, securing his victory over Patrick Cantlay. With a tee shot landing in the water, Cantlay narrowly missed a 20-foot, 3-inch putt that would have prolonged the playoff. Glover’s win marks a significant milestone, becoming the first 54-hole leader over 40 years old to win a FedEx Cup Playoff event since Tiger Woods achieved this feat in 2018.

A Hard-Fought Battle

Glover, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and a former Clemson star, finished regulation tied with Cantlay at 15 under-par 265. Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood trailed closely behind, just one stroke adrift. This victory further solidifies Glover’s strong performance, projecting him to surge from No. 49 to a top-five position in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings. Impressively, he has now achieved five top-six finishes in the last six weeks.

In the scorching heat, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees, and under mounting pressure, Glover resorted to cooling his hands in ice water-filled coolers before teeing off on the 17th and 18th holes. Although his tournament-winning birdie putt on the 18th fell short by one foot, a tap-in for par ensured a playoff, making it the third consecutive PGA Tour event in Memphis to require extra holes.

The Final Round Drama

Entering the final round of the tournament at TPC Southwind with a 14 under-par score, Glover faced fierce competition, with 10 golfers trailing him within five strokes of his lead. Taylor Moore, the closest competitor, was just one stroke behind. However, Moore struggled early on, carding four bogeys with only one birdie on the front nine, eventually finishing with a 71. Cantlay, McIlroy, and Fleetwood relentlessly charged forward, despite a 94-minute weather delay interrupting play shortly after noon.

Glover’s journey was not without its challenges. On the 13th hole, an errant tee shot landed him in the intermediate rough, followed by a second shot that found the primary rough. Yet, he demonstrated his resilience by sinking an impressive 20.5-foot putt to save par. A setback occurred on the 14th hole when his tee shot found the water, resulting in a bogey. However, Glover rallied and saved his score with a remarkable 29-foot, 8-inch putt. Cantlay, capitalizing on this opportunity, secured two consecutive birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, momentarily taking the lead.

The Last Man Standing

During a post-tournament interview on CBS, Glover reflected on his victory, stating, “It was just keep playing. Keep fighting. Stay close, get close. And I was fortunate to get in a playoff. I said yesterday the guns would be coming, and they came. I was just the last man standing this week.” His resilience and determination were evident, propelling him to claim the title.

As Cantlay completed his round, he and Glover found themselves tied, leading to a suspenseful wait in the clubhouse before heading out to the driving range. Ultimately, Cantlay’s tee shot bounced several times before landing in the water, while Glover’s 288-yard drive found the middle of the fairway. With a 22-foot, 2-inch putt remaining, Glover confidently approached the final moments and secured his well-deserved victory.
