How Tight Should Golf Glove Fit

Many golfers go to great lengths to be fit for their clubs. Their golf gloves? Not always so much.

Maria Bonzagni, FootJoy’s senior director of marketing for gloves and accessories, said most players wear the wrong size glove and probably don’t take care of their gloves properly, which can lead gloves to break down quickly and not perform well.

She recently talked with Golfweek about this overlooked piece of equipment:

How tight is a golf glove supposed to be when you put it on for the first time?

A golf glove should fit like a second skin, so there is no interruption or excess material between your hand, the grip and the club itself. When you think about golf, the closest point of contact that you have between you, the golfer, and the club is the grip. So having the proper fitting glove, so that it feels close … the better it will perform and the better you will perform.

So do most golfers wear a glove that is too big?

In the research that we have conducted, more than 60 percent of all golfers are wearing the incorrect size, and generally it is too big. Some people believe that the Velcro (tab, which secures the glove closed) should be flush to the hook end of the glove (on the top of the hand). That’s incorrect. You want to see about a quarter inch of Velcro showing (with the tab closed), and it should fit tight. This will allow for adjustability throughout the life of the glove through time. So after the 10th or the 15th round it may be flush, but not when you start wearing it.

What is the difference between a regular and a cadet glove?

A cadet-style glove is designed for people who have shorter fingers and a wider palm. It’s about the proportions of your hand, relative to its size.

What is the best, fastest way to dry a wet glove?

Let it dry naturally. Expose it to the air in your house or someplace where there are moderate temperatures. You can air it out on your clubs too. Once it is dry, you can store it in its package or a Ziplock bag to help retain its life. A glove might feel like it has shrunk after a while, but due to the tanning properties, all you have to do is put your hand back in it. It’s amazing how you can just work it and it will perform really well.

What you don’t want to do is crumple it up and leave it in your bag. And don’t leave it crumpled up over the winter in your bag so you can use it the following spring. Don’t leave it in the glove compartment of your car when it is hot, either.

Do the pros still use leather gloves?

Leather is the ideal material for better players because of how it feels, manages moisture, the grip that it provides and the durability. In the Asian market, there is a higher percentage that may choose a synthetic or microfiber material because of the various climates and high humidity or rain.

Hair sheep, which look like small goats. In Spanish, the word cabretta means “small goat.” The animals are raised in hot, arid climates, and the leather we get is a byproduct of the food industry. (The sheep are farmed as a source of food, not exclusively for production of leather.) Ethiopia is a key source of leather in our StaSoft and SciFlex. It is a thin leather that is very strong.

How long should a well-made glove last?

This question comes up a lot. Do you hit a bucket of balls before you play? Do you take a practice swing before you hit a practice ball and before you hit a shot from tee to green? So this is the equation: One day of golf equals how many swings you take. A bucket of balls is like a round, then all your practice swings is another, plus all your practice swings on the course and all the shots you take. That’s like four rounds. Add in that it might be hot and humid and you perspire a lot. The real answer is, it depends.
