How To Apply Self Tanner Without Glove

TikTok has blessed us with many a fake tanning hack, from faux tan freckles to the fake tan contour – but a new viral video is doing the rounds that might just question everything you thought you knew about the art of the faux glow. Prepare yourself.

Australian TikTokers and sunless tanning fanatics the Hondrout Twins have nearly nine million views – and counting – on their video showing the difference between using a mitt and a pair of gloves to apply fake tan, and it’s fair to say the results are surprising.

Applying a tanning mouse on one leg with a glove, and the other with the mitt, it’s quickly clear that the gloves give a much deeper colour and allow the product to go further, while the mitt gives a softer shade of tan, and dare we say it – looked a little patchy.

“With gloves, it does not absorb any product, so you literally get the optimal colour,” one of the twins says as she applies the mousse, before adding: “Using a mitt, you can see already that half of the colour is absorbed through that mitt. They’re just completely different as you can see.

“The whole leg was covered with the glove, but the mitt it didn’t reach the whole leg and even a bit of the foot.”

Showing the difference with both legs together, one was clearly darker than the other. They ended the video asking: “Wow, there’s a big difference there as you can see. What do you guys use, gloves or mitts?”

Of course, the comments section was alive with tanning chat, divided between mind-blown mitt users and glove devotees.

“Omg why have I been using a MITT all my life,” one wrote, while another added: “You. Are. Joking. How did I not know this!?! I tan every single night with a mitt.”

“I’ve been using gloves for years… it takes slightly longer because like she said it doesn’t absorb like the mitt does but [it’s] so worth it,” one viewer weighed in.

And when debate ensued about whether gloves will cause more streaking than mitts, most glove lovers maintained that it’s all about spending time working the product into the skin.

“I switched to gloves a while ago – just gotta move quick and really rub it in. I do one whole leg up to bikini line before starting the next,” a helpful commenter wrote.

This is one fake tanning trick we’ll certainly be trying, but that doesn’t mean we’re hanging up our mitts for good. They always come in handy for tanning your back in a pinch (simply wrap it around a hairbrush, kitchen spatula, whatever you have handy, and voila – your very own back tanner) or buffing in any stubborn areas that aren’t quite blending. Happy tanning!
