Gloves keep your hands warm and dry during the cold months of winter. They come in handy for all sorts of things – shoveling out driveways, walking the dog, working at the resort, going ski touring, ski mountaineering, and so much more. They are one of the most valuable and most abused pieces of gear that you will wear.

The key to wearing leather gloves is to make sure you waterproof them. I usually choose Kinco Style 1927KW Gloves waterproofed Sno-Seal. Sno-Seal is a beeswax formula that waterproofs and protects leather. I use it to waterproof my Kinco Gloves, but you can also use it on higher end gloves, boots, or other leather products.

Sno-Seal

Waterproofing leather gloves is not rocket science. It’s important to warm up the gloves to open up the pores in the leather. This allows the Sno-Seal to soak in and absorb the waterproofing. I’ve done this in a microwave at a dirtbag hotel in Jackson, but it’s best to use an oven.

Here’s the process I use to to Sno-Seal my Kinco gloves:

Preheat oven to 150 degrees. Sno-Seal recommends 120 degrees, but I prefer warmer. Do not go much warmer than 150 degrees as parts of the glove can melt or you can burn them.

Brand New Gloves

Place gloves in oven for 5 minutes. Put them on a sheet of tin foil with the palms up. Try to keep the gloves directly off of the oven rack.

Remove gloves and place on hands. Flex your gloved hand to open up pores and stretch the leather. If the gloves are too warm, wear liner gloves to protect your hands.
Dip fingers in Sno-Seal. Use gloved hands to liberally apply Sno-Seal to all parts of the gloves – especially the stitching.

Pay attention to the stitching

Place back in oven for 5 minutes to ensure Sno-Seal completely soaks into the leather. If you don’t do it correctly, your gloves will be sticky and gross. A properly baked Kinco should not be shiny . The gloves will be a shade darker than when purchased.

Round 2.

Repeat application of Sno-Seal and heating until gloves can no longer soak in any more Sno-Seal. Three to four applications seems to do the trick, but it depends on the grain of the leather. Your gloves may feel a bit stiff, but they will quickly soften up after a few days of use.

Finished Product

The entire process takes less than 30 minutes. It usually uses about 1/3 of an 7 oz jar of Sno-Seal. You can repeat the waterproofing process as often as needed to ensure your gloves are waterproof. Twice a season is usually plenty, but it depends on what you use your gloves for.

Be aware that baking leather gloves caked with Sno-Seal in your oven can have a strong odor. Turn on any oven fans, open the windows, and wait until your roommates are gone before Sno-Sealing your leather gloves.
