How To Cast On And Cast Off Without Gaps Gloves

A Free Knitting Lesson from Liz @PurlsAndPixels

After spending hours hand knitting a pair of warm fuzzy mittens, you’ll want to be sure your final stitches are perfect. Closing the gaps left in your knitting will be essential to making those mittens both beautiful and warm. These mitten bind off tips will help you finish your knitted gloves neatly.

Finishing Tips for Hand Knit Mittens

The thumbs are the most simple bit of binding off mittens, so we will start there. After you finish knitting all of the thumb stitches, you’ll want to cut your your yarn off the ball or skein. Make sure you leave about 8 to 10 inches of yarn hanging from the thumb. This yarn is called the “yarn tail.” You will close the hole at the top of the thumbs with the loose end or “yarn tail.”

Step 1: Remove mitten thumb stitches from knitting needles.

Step 2: Pull the loose yarn to the inside of the thumb.

Step 3: Pull tightly to close the hole at the tip of the mitten thumb.

Finishing Mitten Fingertips

When binding off mittens, finishing the fingertips on the main body of the mitten begins in the same way as closing the thumb holes. You’ll remove the stitches from the knitting needles. Next, you will make a decorative duplicate stitch, to both disguise the hole at the top of the mitten and to round out the hand of the glove so it is not pointy or square.

Step 1: Remove mitten finger stitches from knitting needles.

Step 2: Pull tight to close hole at top of mittens.

Step 3: Begin the decorative duplicate stitch.

Step 4: Finish duplicate stitch and bring yarn to inside of mittens.

Step 5: Pull tight.

Finishing Mittens, Closing the Gap at the Thumb Base

Step 1: Thread loose end onto darning needle.

Step 2: Make a duplicate stitch on thumb side of gap.

Step 3. Bring yarn tail under stitches & up thumb side of gap.

Step 4: Make a duplicate stitch on palm side of gap.

Step 5: Make the first side of the duplicate stitch.

Step 6: Make the second side of the duplicate stitch.

Step 7: Bring the yarn back thru the center stitch.

Step 8: Bring the yarn to the inside of the glove and weave in.

Step 9: Pull tight.

All done! I hope you have finished some beautiful work.
