How to Keep Your Leather Gym Gloves Clean and Fresh

After a few intense gym sessions, our weightlifting gloves can start to smell…really bad! There’s nothing worse than reaching into your gym bag and pulling out a pair of gloves that reek of sweat. Not to mention, if they’re still damp and cold, it’s an uncomfortable experience. But don’t worry, cleaning them doesn’t have to be a daunting task. In fact, we have a simple solution that will have them smelling brand new in under 4 minutes!

Keep Your Hands Fresh: How to Clean Your Leather Gym Gloves

Cleaning your gym gloves by hand is incredibly easy. All you need is some basic hand soap (preferably anti-bacterial) and access to a sink. This process is so quick that I often do it while waiting for my kettle to boil for a cup of tea.

  1. Fill your sink with warm-ish, soapy water. I recommend using an anti-bacterial hand soap to kill off any germs. Keep the water relatively cool to avoid damaging the gloves.
  2. Submerge your gym gloves in the water and work the material between your fingers to ensure that the soap thoroughly penetrates the fabric.
  3. Turn each glove inside out and repeat the process to clean both sides.
  4. Squeeze out any excess water from the gloves.
  5. Rinse the gloves thoroughly with clean, cool water to wash away all the soap.
  6. Dry the gloves by placing them on a low to moderate temperature radiator, still inside out. Avoid using a tumble dryer as the heat can damage their shape.
  7. If your gloves have elasticated wristbands or are made from thick material, dry them both inside out and the right way around to achieve an even finish.
  8. Once dry, flip your gloves back to the right side, and they will be as good as new!

It’s worth noting that leaving your gloves to soak in the sink doesn’t yield significantly better results. I find that cleaning them and drying them immediately works just fine.

Extra Odor? Let Your Washing Machine Help

If your gloves are especially stinky, there’s an even easier solution – toss them in the washing machine! Use a low or Eco setting (such as a 30-degree wash) to preserve the shape of the gloves. However, if you have leather gym gloves, it’s crucial to check with the manufacturer before washing them in the machine.

You can even wash your gloves with your other clothes, but be sure to tuck away any clasps, buttons, or Velcro to prevent damage to the rest of your gear. To dry your gloves, simply place them inside out on a radiator and let them air dry naturally. In no time, they will be smelling fresh and clean!

What Not to Do

If your gloves are sweaty, resist the temptation to spray them with aftershave, deodorant, or perfume. Trust me, it will only make things worse. (I learned this the hard way!)

In Conclusion

Cleaning your workout gloves and keeping them smelling fresh is a breeze and takes less than 4 minutes. So, there’s no excuse for having stinky gym gloves anymore! Follow these simple steps, and your gloves will look and smell as good as new.
