How To Clean Microfiber Cloths For Eyeglasses

You know you should keep your glasses clean—unless you like looking at the world through a fuzzy, smudgy haze. Maintaining proper care of your eyeglasses is the best way to extend their longevity and keep them looking great for a longer time. In fact, you should clean your glasses every night, with a microfiber cloth and eyeglass cleaner.

However, not many people stop to think about proper cleaning methods for the microfiber cloth itself. Eventually, dirt, oils and other mess will make its way from the lenses to the cloth. Here’s how to clean your microfiber cloth, so that your glasses can continue to stay clean.

Luckily, microfiber can take a lot of abuse—but eventually, there will come a time when you need to get out the grossness so your lenses remain pristine.

To properly clean your microfiber cloth without water, just shake out the dirt and dust. A few thorough shakes is all you need to keep on top of day-to-day mess.

When it’s time to wash your microfiber cloth, use cold water and a few drops of fabric-softener-free detergent. Let the cloth soak in the water and detergent for a few minutes. Rub any heavy stains, then drain the water and rinse with clear, clean water. Hang to dry.

If you’d rather wash your microfiber cleaning cloth in the washing machine, add it to a load with cold water. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, whether in your detergent or separately. When it’s clean, either hang to dry or tumble dry along with the rest of your laundry.

Typically, you should clean your microfiber cloth at least once per month, if not more. It’s easy to toss it in with your other laundry so there’s no excuse not to have a clean cloth at the ready.

If you were surprised to hear that you should be cleaning your eyeglasses every night, it’s time for a refresher course. Just a couple minutes per day will help you cut down on smudges and oils, leaving your glasses looking great for years to come. It also helps control breakouts.

For the most part, a microfiber cloth and eyeglass cleaner should be enough to remove surface oils and dirt. At least once per week, take your glasses and run them under cold water. Using a lotion-free dish soap, gently rub the lenses and frames. Then rinse off your glasses and dry them with a clean microfiber cloth.

Once you get in the habit of cleaning and maintaining proper care of your eyeglasses regularly, the world will seem sharper and brighter—and you’ll never go back to wearing dirty glasses again.
