How To Determine Electrical Gloves Vs Arc Flash Protection

At Rozel, we understand the importance of safety in the electrical industry. One of the most critical aspects of personal protective equipment (PPE) is the selection of the right gloves. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide to choosing the right gloves, based on the standards set by NFPA 70E.

NFPA 70E 2024 130.7(C)(7) Hand and Arm Protection – requires that rubber insulating gloves with protectors be worn when there is a danger from hand injury from electric shock.

Additionally this section requires that arc flash protection for arms and hands shall be worn when there is possible exposure to arc flash burn. The arms shall be protected by arc-rated clothing. The hands shall be protected by heavy-duty leather gloves or arc-rated gloves, if insulating rubber gloves are used for shock protection, protectors must be worn over them (i.e. heavy-duty leather gloves). Heavy-duty leather gloves are made entirely of leather thicker than 0.07 mm and can be either unlined or lined with a nonflammable and non-melting material.

Understanding Arc Flash Glove Requirements

Regardless of the size of the arc flash or the voltage you are exposed to, the rules are the same:

If there is a risk of shock you must wear rubber insulating gloves rated (and heavy-duty leather gloves) to a voltage higher than the voltage you are working on or near. (be sure to understand your voltage cutoffs, see this article)

If there is a risk of arc flash, you must wear heavy-duty leather gloves or arc-rated gloves which are rated to an incident energy higher than the incident energy you can be exposed to. Remember, arc-rated gloves are not acceptable if you could be exposed to a shock hazard. This article discusses this topic further.

The Advantages of Arc-Rated Gloves

Arc-rated gloves: These gloves often incorporate materials such as carbon filaments and other proprietary materials and coatings that make the glove flame-resistant or self-extinguishing. These materials also provide properties such as anti-static, cut and abrasion resistance, oil and water repellency, and heat resistance up to several hundred degrees. Arc-rated gloves are tested under ASTM F2675, and it’s crucial to pay attention to the rating of the gloves before purchasing or using them. Sometimes arc-rated gloves are great for flipping breakers when concerned about an arc flash hazard but not concerned about being exposed to electric shock.
