Finding a new winter coat is a whole thing for me and I know I’m not the only one who deals with frustrating situations when they’re trying to find the right clothing items to fit them. I’m not the biggest or tallest person in the world and I need a size 00 petite, or an xxs petite for most items. I had a particular style of wool coat in mind to add to my closet this winter and I thought I found the perfect one. It was even available in xxs. Well, when it arrived, I was pretty much swimming in it. I went through my closet to try on some older coats to see why in the world I thought xxs was my size and why this one was so big on me, and that’s when I came across this old wool jacket from about 12 years ago. I always liked this jacket and it fits me perfectly. I thought it might be a good stand-in on less cold days while I waited to find the perfect wool coat. The only issue was that it was covered in a fine fuzz made up of various types of lint and pet fur from years of wear, storage, and some unfortunate attempts at washing it that didn’t end so well. And that’s how I rediscovered the rubber glove trick for wool coats!

Removing Lint From a Wool Coat

If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard of using a rubber glove to remove cat fur and lint when cleaning, but maybe you just never put two-and-two together and realized how handy this could be on your favourite wool coats. I had actually been searching in local stores for a specific pet-fur removing tool, but wasn’t finding exactly what I had in mind. I wanted something that was kind of a long brush with short rubber bristles and a thin end. I was hoping to use this for detail cleaning in our car and thought that when I found it, I might also use it for my coat. Well, I never found it locally so when I really wanted to wear this coat one day, I ended up just grabbing a pair of rubber gloves. For this purpose at least, I actually think the rubber gloves worked better than the little detail brush tool would!

How to Remove Lint and Fuzz From a Wool Coat With a Rubber Glove

You’re going to love this. It’s just so satisfying and it works so well. I’m kind of sad that I fussed with lint rollers for so long trying to restore this jacket.

All you need to do is put on a rubber glove, lay your coat down flat, and start “brushing” your hand down over the fabric of your coat. You’ll see the top layer of loose fuzz start to pill and flake off at the bottom of the jacket. Some of the little fuzz balls may become attached at the bottom hem, but you can easily just pick those off with your hand. I was so surprised by how fresh and clean the surface of the coat looked after just a few passes when it had looked so unpresentable and fuzz-covered for so long.
