Rescue BowWow

After you complete Tail Cave, return to Mabe Village. You’ll be greeted with the news that BowWow has been taken.

Return to Koholint Prairie (where the Witch’s house is) via the Mysterious Forest. As soon as you enter, jump over the holes to retrieve the Heart Piece you couldn’t reach before. Jump over the holes to the north and head up.

When you reach the sign for Tal Tal Heights, turn right. The Moblins are in the cave just a little to the right of that sign.

Head inside and fight your way through the three rooms of various Moblins to retrieve BowWow.

Finding Bottle Grotto

Even if you return BowWow to his home, Madam MeowMeow will ask you to take him for a walk — this is the game’s way of telling you that you need to take him with you.

Instead, head back into the Mysterious Forest. Get to the top left corner where you can exit toward the north. Turn right at the sign and keep heading right until you hit the swamp.

Let BowWow attack the flowers and make your way to the right across the top of the swamp.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

Keep your shield up and let BowWow do most of the attacking. Make your way across the top of the swamp to the right. There’s a chest in the middle with 50 rupees in it if you want to take a quick detour. The door in the upper right will lead you to Bottle Grotto.

The map above shows an overview of the Bottle Grotto dungeon. We’ve marked the locations of the important items like the Compass, Stone Beak, and Map, as well as the Power Bracelet. We’ve also marked the boss fights and the entrance and exit to any sidescrolling tunnels.

Find the Stone Beak

Head north from the entrance. In the next room, use Magic Powder to light both torches (braziers?). That will open the door on the right.

Take out the Stalfoses (Stalfosi?) in the next room, and a Small Key will drop. Head back to the left.

Wait in the doorway for the Blade Traps to reset.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

Unlock the door on the left. Step through, but stay in the doorway. Dodge the Blade Traps in the corners, and then kill the two Keese to unlock the door to the north.

Head through it, jump the gap, and knock the Hardhat Beetle off the platform. Open the chest for this dungeon’s Stone Beak.

Continue to the Hinox mini-boss

From the where you picked up the Stone Beak, return to the room with the Spark, and then head two rooms to the right.

There’s an Owl statue here, along with another Spark and a large crystal. The owl statue will tell you that Part of the floor is raised. Tap the shining crystal.

Do that.

Head down one screen to find some more raised floor tiles, another crystal, and a Shrouded Stalfos. Take out the enemy, and then stand in the corner of the blocks to hit this new crystal. Open the chest for another Small Key.

Exit the room to the right.

Jump the gaps to the switch and the crystal, and then exit to the north.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

Jump across the gaps to the right side of the room, and stand on the switch to drop a chest containing another Small Key. Don’t go to the chest yet, though. Hit the crystal first to switch the floor tiles, and then jump up to the chest.

Keep jumping out the door to the north.

Dodge your way around the Mask-Mimics until your back is to them. Hold down B to perform a spin attack to take them out. A Small Key will drop on the other side of the barrier. Backtrack through the last few rooms clockwise — down, left, up, and right — to go pick it up.

Loop around again — left, down, right, and up — to get back to this room, and exit to the right.

Take out the two Spiked Beetles, and unlock the door in the upper right with one of your keys.

Push the blocks together to reveal some stairs.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

Dodge the Keese and the Spark. Push the two blocks toward the middle to make a set of stairs appear in the upper right corner. (The Owl statue here says to Make every block design the same. A new path will open.)

Jump your way through the sidescrolling area and climb up the ladder on the far left.

Jump the gap to the center of the room to collect some hearts. Dodge the Spark and Keese as you jump your way north and through the one way door.

Hinox mini-boss

Dodge the Hinox, and attack while it recovers.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

First, this fight is harder than anything you’ve done so far, so be prepared for that. Second, it’s not as hard as it seems at first.

The Hinox only has a couple attacks. It’ll charge at you to grab you and throw you, or it’ll toss a bomb. You’ll also take a ton of damage just for touching the Hinox.

Your job is to keep running around the outside edge of the room — watching for the crumbling floor tiles — to avoid its charges. Any time it charges and misses (hopefully), spin around and slash once or twice, and then put some distance between you and it. It’ll only take a few repeats of this to defeat this mini-boss.

A Fairy and a Portal will appear in this room after you’ve won.

Find the Bottle Grotto Map and Power Bracelet

Path from the Hinox to the Power Bracelet.

From the Hinox mini-boss room, exit the room to the right. Check the Owl statue to be told First, defeat the imprisoned Pols Voice. Last, the skeletal Stalfos …

Jump the gaps in the floor to pick up the floating hearts (if you need them), and exit the room through the door in the top right.

The Vacuum Mouth will suck you into the holes in the floor. It’s worth the sacrifice to take it while you’re falling.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

There’s a Vacuum Mouth in the bottom left that will act like a black hole, but it will only draw you in for a couple seconds at a time. Just keep moving away from it while it’s active and you should be fine. (Alternately, you can sacrifice a heart of health to jump out and attack it — it’ll only take one hit to kill it.)

Open the chest to get the Bottle Grotto Map. Exit to the north.

Pick up the floating Magic Powder and open the chest for 20 rupees. Head left.

Use Magic Powder to light at least one of the braziers to scare the Boo Buddies so you can damage them. Once they’re both dead(er) or have fled, a chest will drop. Open it to find the Power Bracelet that lets you lift pots and stones.

Exit to the right.

Find the compass

Now that you have the Power Bracelet, it’s time to head back to the beginning of the dungeon. Head right, down twice, and left to return to the Hinox miniboss room. Use the portal to teleport back to the dungeon entrance.

Move and smash some pots on the left side until you can open the chest for 50 rupees. Loop around to the room to the right — go up, right, and then down through the locked door — into the room directly to the right of the first room.

Hold down B to charge your sword, and kill the Mask-Mimic while your back is to it.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

Toss some of the pots in that room to clear space, and take out the Mask-Mimic. A chest will drop with this dungeon’s Compass inside.

Get the Nightmare Key

Path to the Nightmare Key.

Head back to the teleport and warp to the Hinox room again. Head right, and then up twice. Work your way right along the top of the room smashing pots to your heart’s content.

When you get to the crystal, hit it once, step down onto the blue square, and then hit it again to continue to the chest with a Small Key inside.

Head back to the crystal and hit it again, but stay on the red squares. Continue right until you see another crystal. Hit this one, and then exit through the door in the lower right.

Defeat the enemies in order to get the Nightmare Key. (We’ve also included arrows for moving the blocks to reach the Pols Voice.)
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

This is where the owl statue’s advice comes in. First, move the blocks so you can get to the imprisoned Pols Voice at the bottom. Shove one of the top blocks down and the other to the side. Dodge the Keese and Shrouded Stalfos as you go pick up one of the pots. Toss the pot at the Pols, and then do it again.

After it’s dead, take out the Keese and then turn your attention to the Stalfos. Do it in that order. Once all three are dead, a chest with the Nightmare Key will drop.

Get to the Genie boss fight

Path to the Genie boss fight.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

Head north out of the room where you picked up the Nightmare Key and unlock the door on your right.

Take out the Pols Voice in the next room, and then head down the stairs.

Climb down the ladder into the sidescroller room. Jump onto the first platform and ride it down. Head left, and climb the tall ladder there.

Carry a pot with you to force the second platform to descend.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

The second platform is grumpy, so it needs more weight. Pick up one of the pots to your right, but don’t throw it. Carry it left to the platform and ride it down. Get rid of your pot, and climb the ladder out.

In the next room, jump the gaps to the Nightmare Door and head through.

Genie boss fight

Genie gives you hints about how to defeat him.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

First, this boss’s name is Genie, but it’s actually a clown-genie hybrid born out of nightmares.

Second, you won’t be able to damage it until you get through its bottle.

Genie phase 1

Link’s Awakening Bottle Grotto Genie boss fight phase 1
When Genie hides in his bottle, hit the bottle with your sword, and then pick it up and throw it against the wall.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

While Genie is juggling fireballs, get to the opposite side of the room. When he starts throwing the fireballs, keep moving to avoid them.

Genie will duck down into his bottle and start hopping toward you. Hit the bottle with your sword, and then pick it up and throw it against the wall.

Do that three times.

Genie phase 2

Wait out the spectral Genies, dodge the giant fireball, and attack Genie four more times.
Nintendo EPD, Grezzo/Nintendo via Polygon

For this phase, a pair of spectral Genies will spin around you for a second — you can ignore them. One will eventually become corporeal and toss a big fireball at you. Avoid it, and then hit Genie with your sword. Repeat that four times to defeat him.

Your reward is a Heart Container. Pick it up, and head left to find the Conch Horn and complete this dungeon.

You’ll get a screen with your next hint: The prairie is waiting.
