Put Their Name on Everything
The first step of keeping track of your kids’ winter gear is getting their name on everything. This is required at most daycares and schools but if you haven’t already here are some tips on how to do it!
- Fabric Markers: Purchase Fabric Markers at the local craft store and write their names on the tag
- Iron-On Labels: You can purchase Iron-On custom name labels on Etsy
- Sew-On Labels: If you’re a bit more handy you can sew on frabric labels for a nice finish
- Staples Labels: You can purchase Custom Labeling kits with multiple types of labels
Stay Organized at Home

Keep your kids organized with their own containers to store all their winter gear. Keep it where you store their jackets and boots for easy access. Although it is attractive to dump all hats, scarves, mittens, etc in one box it adds on precious minutes when you’re trying to get out the door.
Consider having your kids pick their own container from the dollar store in a colour they like. Extra bonus points if the container has a lid, when summer comes you can pop the lid on for easy storage!
Shoelace Trick for Mittens
For kids that constantly lose their mittens repurpose an extra-long string or shoelace. Loop the string through one arm, past the back, and through the other arm to tie onto the mittens. The string should be long enough to come out both arms so kids can take their mitts on and off. If you loop the string through the back tag it should stay in place.

Mitten clips are wildly available at most department stores as well as children’s clothing stores like Carters! Mitten clips have two metal ends that clip to your gloves and your coat with a little bungee strip in between to make sure nothing gets lost.
There are some clips that are a bit longer that are specifically made to attach hats to jackets too! The key part is with the clips hats and mitts never need to be separated from their jacket (other than to be dried or washed).
