What You Will Need:

  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Newspaper
  • White Paint
  • Red Marker
  • Balloon
  • Pin
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Candy (wrapped)

Step #1: Inflating the Balloon

Start by blowing up a balloon to about the size of a softball. This will serve as the base for your paper mache baseball.

Step #2: Paper Mache Coating

Cut out strips of newspaper, approximately an inch wide and a few inches long. Mix your paper mache mixture by combining 3/4 glue and 1/4 water. Dip a piece of newspaper into the glue mixture, ensuring it is completely coated, and remove any excess glue with your fingers.

Cover the balloon with moistened pieces of newspaper, leaving a small area around the balloon end uncovered. This uncovered area will allow you to pop the balloon and fill it with candy later on.

Step #3: Drying the Mache

Once the balloon is fully covered, place it in the sink to dry. After it has partially dried, add another layer of paper using white paper to make it easier to paint the ball later. The drying process may take up to 24 hours, depending on your region and temperature.

Step #4: Filling with Candy and Adding Details

Once the paper mache is completely dry, carefully pop the balloon and fill the cavity with candy. Cover the hole with some white paper coated in the glue mixture and allow it to dry.

Next, paint the entire balloon white and let it dry. Finally, use a red marker to draw stitching on the ball, creating a large oval shape with V-shaped marks around it.

And voila! Your paper mache baseball is ready to be used. Grab a bat and have someone throw you the ball. If you hit a home run, you’ll even get a sweet reward – candy!
