How To Make Milking Cow Glove

What better way to learn about where milk comes from than to set up a milking dramatic play station. Pretend play is an important part of child development. Children learn so much about themselves and the world around them through pretend play. For our farm themed activities we learned where milk came from and how some farmers get the milk, by using their hands and milking the cows udders. I wanted Little Miss to fully understand how this was done so I set up a “milk cow” for her. To say she loved this would be an understatement.

You most certainly do not have to make a cow if you do not want to, but if you have time, it really will make the idea of milking a cow come alive.

SUPPLIES:

-Cow (optional)

-Surgical glove

-Flour

-Water

-Pin

-string

-bucket

DIRECTIONS:

I used our Ikea table and attached a cow I created on a piece of poster board. I attached it to the table with blue sticky tak. I filled a glove with some flour colored water and then tied it off and then attached a piece of string to it. I used the table and chairs to attach the string to so that the “udders” would hand perfectly underneath the cow. I placed a bucket underneath the cow and poked a tiny little pinhole in bottom of the udders.

Once I had it all set up, I demonstrated how farmers milk their cows and how milk comes out and then passed it over to Little Miss. She did an amazing job getting all the “milk” out of the cows udders. It was funny to watch her because she would occasionally squirt herself with the milk. This not only helped her experience milking a cow, but also worked on her fine motor skills through all the squeezing she had to do.

Once we had our milk, we obviously had to make butter. We followed this tutorial from Playdough to Plato and it turned out great. I ended up having to do most of the shaking, but Little Miss loved being my taste tester when the time came.

Our cow proudly resides wherever Little Miss totes him. She loves her cow and will pretend to milk her constantly, minus the udders.
