Chance The Rapper is a respected, gifted, talented, black rapper who calls himself Chance The Rapper because he wants to be given a chance to prove his worth. The song Cocoa Butter Kisses is by Chance The Rapper featuring Twista and Vic Mensa, and was produced by Cam and Petter Cottontale.

In the hook, “Cigarettes on cigarettes, my mama think I stank. I got burn holes in my hoodies; all my homies think it’s dank. I miss my cocoa butter kisses. I miss my cocoa butter kisses” he is implying that he smoke so many cigarettes that it leaves a haunted smell that causes him to stink. He smokes so much that he literary burns holes in his clothes and his mother can smell the cigarettes (either marijuana or actual cigarettes) on him. The repetition of the phrase “I miss my cocoa butter kisses” in the hook can mean he misses his parents scent of cocoa butter and the kisses she gives him. He is wishing he could go back to this particular moment in time. The title cocoa butter kisses emphases that it has an importance to Chance’s past history in the song. Cocoa butter symbolizes love because cocoa butter is generally made to smell good, it heals your skin tone, and it gives you smooth skin that people love to use it.

Chance The Rapper uses multiple forms of figurative language throughout the first verse. When he says, “Okie dokie, alky,keep it lowkey like Thor lil bro. Or he’ll go blow the loudy, saudy of sour Saudi” he uses an example of an onomatopoeia to elaborate on the idea of being an alcoholic. He continues with a simile comparing him keeping a low profile like Thor’s little brother because Thor gets all the attention while he’ll go off to smoke the loud Sour Diesel but he calls it “saudy of sour Saudi”. He then makes an allusion to the Looney Toon cartoon Wile the coyote acting crazy and comparing him to his friend Alex Wiley the rapper when he says, “Wiley up off peyote, wilding like that coyote. If I sip any Henny, my belly just might be outtie.” He points out that his friend Wiley is “off peyote” which means payote that is a cactus he is hallucinating on. Chance indicates that if he takes another sip of the alcoholic drink Hennessey he’s going to throw up all over the place. Chance still continues to make references to allusions when he says, “Pull up inside a huggy,Starsky & Hutch a dougie. I just opened up the pack in an hour I’ll ash my lucky. Tonight she just yelling, “fuck me,” two weeks she’ll be yelling, “fuck me”. Used to like orange cassette tapes with Timmy, Tommy, and Chuckieand Chuck E. Cheese’s pizzas,Jesus pieces, sing Jesus love me.” Starsky & Hutch are characters from the famous television series in the 70’s, and Timmy, Tommy, and Chuckie are characters from the Rugrats cartoon. He remembers the days when he brings up the past when he liked watching the Rugrats cassette tapes and eating Chuck E. Cheese pizza when he was little. He misses the Jesus sayings from the Bible because it conveys Jesus love for him. He has a flashback to the days were he smoked so much he had to put Visine in his eyes so his grandpa wouldn’t notice he had smoked when he says, “Put Visine inside my eyes so my grandpa would fucking hug me.” This emphasizes that his grandfather doesn’t accept the fact he smokes so Chance tries to hide it.

The bridge of the song contributes to the idea of being addicted to drugs. It indicates that drugs is the cover-up of those cocoa butter kisses in their past where they get a sense of protection and love from their parents. So, people lean to drugs to get that same reaction. The song is remembering the times where they relied to those cocoa butter kisses and didn’t have to result to drugs to feel loved. This is the causation of the addictiveness to the drugs.

In Vic Mensa verse he uses a wordplay when he says, “But these kids these days,they get so high, burn trees, smoke chlorophyll. Till they can’t feel shit, shit-faced, faced it, 15 hits on this LElevated,train, and the craziest thing” by using elevated as a synonym for getting high. Also, in the linesit means that these kids these days get so high that they literally can’t feel there face and there so high that they feel like they are on a train. This is an example of a hyperbole. As the verse continues it shows an example of parallelism to create the main idea when Mensa says, “Got me feeling like Lauryn Hill, miseducated,my dick delegated. Rap Bill Bellamy,they said I shoulda never made it. Probably shoulda been dead or in jail. Deadbeat dad, enough of that jazz. Asshole, absinthe up in that class. Are we there yet? Ice cubes in a bong. We’re brain dead, take a tug and then pass.” The main idea is trying to understand what love is, which is why people result to drugs, getting high, and having sex. Vic Mensa makes a reference to Lauryn Hill’s album miseducated where she talks about love being modern. He compares Lauryn Hill’s song to how he feels because he’s miseducated about love where he explores through drugs, getting high, and having sex. He brings up the stereotype of black fathers being nonexistent in their kids’ life or a bad father when he says, “deadbeat dad”. Again he goes deeper by using a rhetorical question asking “Are we there yet?” meaning is we high yet. He’s saying that we get so high that we become brain dead and cause us to pass out because it takes away our pain we once felt. This song is basically saying by us not getting that cocoa butter kisses love anymore or for those who never even experienced is looking for love through the wrong way, through having sex, doing drugs, and getting high. That’s why it causes us to find that love we all been longing for and result to being addicted to drugs.

In the second hook, Chance changes the word “hoodies” to “memories” when he says, “I got burn holes in my memories, all my homies think it’s drank.” This is important because it shows that he is confessing what he meant the first time and come to access it. He realizes that smoking is killing his memory ability. He’s justifying what goes through the minds of potheads and any drugs users in general. When we think that we are abusing drugs and starts regretting getting high. This changes the whole meaning of the chorus.

The song ends off with Twista’s verse and he comments on the fact about rappers today that is only rapping about drugs, guns, hoes, and about getting money. When Twista says, “You be flowing about drugs and a Uzi. That’s the new principles sometimes I’mma be about some hoes”. He thinks that music is not talking about any important issues, or doesn’t mean anything anymore, just talks about material things with no important value. He continues by making a valuable point when he says, “Don’t be so judgmental, even though I’m reminiscing. If I don’t know what I miss is. I’mma end up figuring out that its home. And my mother and grandmother cocoa butter kisses”. He’s telling us not to judge him based on his pass. Twista adds on to Chance’s thought about how there is nothing more important than love of family and friends. As he dwells on the pass he concludes to the fact that he misses home because of his mothers and grandmothers cocoa butter kisses. Lastly, Twista chooses to use visual imagery when he says, “And I wanna get a hug, and I can’t cause I’m smoking. Never too old for a spanking, igh”. He indicates that when you did something wrong as a child you would get a spanking. So, he implies that you’re never too old to get a spanking makes listeners visualize those times when they use to get in trouble. In his case his parents doesn’t like the fact that he smokes, which is why he can’t get a hug because then that would cause him to get a spanking.
