I was born for the West. Big backcountry and widen open spaces is where I feel most at home. I love the physical and mental challenges this type of country dishes out, especially on a grueling bow hunt. I do everything I can to prepare myself to not only meet the challenges of this type of country but to excel in the most difficult of circumstances.

For me, I have always been drawn to longer axle-to-axle bows. This is because I have always focused on using equipment that will increase my chances for success. Physics proves that a bow with a longer axle-to-axle and lengthened brace height will be more forgiving, and ultimately, more accurate. Hunting the West requires some serious spot and stalk hunting skills. But, at the end of the day, there will always be those stalks that will leave you hung up at longer shot distances. I have always been committed to doing everything I can to practice and prepare for these types of encounters.

When Hoyt launched the 2020 lineup of hunting bows, I was pumped to see the dedicated focus on the Ultra Series line of bows and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them. The first bow that showed up was the Axius Ultra. The bow was waiting for me on my return home from work and I quickly made my way down to the bow shop to get it setup and dialed in. I was just days away from heading to Utah to hunt mule deer and I wanted to see if there was a chance I may be able to take the new Axius Ultra with me. For those that know me know that I spend a ton of time with the bow I am going to be hunting with each season. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t shoot my bow. I work as hard as I possibly can to be as proficient as I can in order to make the most accurate and ethical shot possible. I take this very seriously.

Right from the start I felt there was something special with this bow. It is the most stable and rock-solid bow I have ever shot. And, I have shot a lot of bows through the years so that is saying something. The new wall on the ZTR Cams felt perfect at full draw and really allowed me to come into a perfect anchor. Getting to anchor was also a great feeling with the smooth draw of the cams. A lot of times with longer axle-to-axle and longer brace height bows you sacrifice speed. However, that wasn’t the case with the Axius Ultra. It shot plenty fast for me. Not only was it fast, it was also super quiet, which I really love! The bow tuned in no time and my impressions of the bow were already very high. I took the bow home and shot it in my yard like I do every day. Even though my hunt was on the doorstep and I didn’t have the time behind the bow like I would normally want, I was 100% convinced that this was the bow I was going to use on my Utah mule deer hunt.

As expected, the mule deer country was wide and vast. Hours and hours were spent glassing looking for the right buck in the right place at the right time allowing me to make a move. Finally, after several days of hard hunting and lots of hard-earned mountain miles, I spotted a buck I was ready to go after. After a long stalk to get into position, I had closed the gap and was ready to put the Axius Ultra to the test on a long, open-terrain shot. As I drew back and anchored, I felt all the confidence in the world. As I let the arrow fly, it was obvious to me that it was on course as it smoked it’s intended target making for a very quick, clean, ethical harvest.

Man, I love Hoyt bows. They give me all of the confidence in the world to perform at my very best. The Axius Ultra is without a doubt the best shooting Hoyt bow I have ever shot and I look forward to shooting it every single day.
