One of the most common questions people ask about Jesus of Nazareth is, what did he look like? People wonder about the shade of his skin, his height and weight, his hair color and hairstyle, and the kind of clothes he wore. Another question people ask is what color Jesus’ eyes are.

The four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, which are by far the best historical records about the person and life of Jesus Christ, don’t mention his eye color. In Revelation, John describes Jesus’ eyes as “flames of fire”; however, that description isn’t intended to be understood literally.

What did Jesus look like?

The Bible doesn’t describe Jesus’ appearance in detail. Even the four Gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — which are like biographies of Jesus, don’t say what he looked like. The closest the Bible gets to describing Jesus’ appearance is in two prophetic verses found in the Old Testament book of Isaiah.

Rather than describing Jesus’ height, weight, eye color, or any other specific physical feature, Isaiah’s prophecy only generally mentions that he was an average-looking person whose appearance was eventually marred when he was arrested, beaten, and crucified.

In contrast to describing Jesus’ appearance, the Bible has a clear theme of not judging people according to what they look like. In John 7:24 Jesus said, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Similarly, 1 Samuel 16:7 reads, “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’”

Revelation’s depiction of Jesus’ appearance

Revelation describes Jesus’ appearance in a scene befitting apocalyptic literature. Similar to the Transfiguration of Christ (Matt. 17:1-7), what John sees is likely not how Jesus always looks but is unique to the eschatological revelation he is about to receive.

John writes: “Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.”

He continues: “The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.” (Revelation 1:12-16)

Matthew 6:22, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light”
