According to Genesis 4:22, Tubal-Cain was the first artisan to work with copper and iron.

Because of its abundance, copper was used for many purposes, including but not limited to different kinds of instruments, pillars for construction, levers, chains, and other temple vessels.

The Tabernacle of Moses even used copper mirrors (the stands were made of copper).

It is a well-known fact that God promised to take the Israelites into a land flowing with milk and honey, but another little-known fact is that the land would also be abundant in copper.

The Bible documents an incident when the children of God got impatient with God while in the wilderness.

They questioned God’s providence in taking them from captivity, where they had some form of security into a life of living by faith in the wilderness.

When they started murmuring about it, God got mad and released fiery serpents, which bit them and killed some of them. However, God was moved with compassion again, and so he told Moses to make a serpent out of copper and raise it on a pole.

The Israelites were then instructed to look to the serpent if they got bit, and they would be healed.

Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people, and many Israelites died… The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.”

So, Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole.

Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. Numbers 21: 6, 8-9.

The use of copper in making the serpent was symbolic as it represented their disobedience which subsequently attracted God’s judgement. But in the same breadth, the serpent also represented God’s mercy.

So, just as a dime has two sides, it could either mean judgment or mercy.

A symbol of Christ’s human nature

According to the gospel of John, Jesus likened himself to the copper serpent that Moses raised in the wilderness.

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up. (John 3:14)

In this scripture as well as many other portions of scripture in the gospels, Jesus emphasized that he was a son of man.

This was important because even though he was the son of God, he had come on earth in the form of man.

By likening himself to the serpent of Moses, Jesus was affirming his perfect human nature, which is what gave him the right to die on the cross on behalf of sinful man.

Nickel

The word nickel is not used in the original Hebrew or Greek texts because it didn’t exist at the time of the Bible. However, some modern English translations have used the word.

For instance, the message translation uses the word in two places, one in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament.

Let us look at these uses and their symbolisms below:

Peter said, “I don’t have a nickel to my name, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!” Acts 3:6, MSG

In this scripture, the word nickel is used to represent the dire economic situation of Peter.

Even though the nickel is not the smallest unit of the dollar, it is still a very small amount that wouldn’t buy you anything.

The fact that nickel is used as one of the alloys in making a dime is noteworthy because the dime is also almost valueless.

While copper represents judgment and mercy, nickel represents lack and dishonesty.

One can therefore infer that the dime may be a symbol of any combination of these, depending on the context.

For instance, it could illustrate how God’s judgment leads to lack.

It could also represent how dishonesty results in missing out on God’s mercy.
