What Does Awana Stand For

Awana is an acronym that means “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed”. This comes from 2 Timothy 2:15 – “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” This verse has several applications not only for our students in Awana but for all believers as well!

In this verse, Paul is encouraging Timothy to see himself as a worker trying to please God. Our salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and once we become followers of Christ our aim is to serve Him instead of the world. It is always tempting to try and please people before or instead of pleasing God, but we hope that AWANA is a place where we can continually remind our children of their true goal in serving God.

Paul also encourages Timothy “not to be ashamed”. During times of hardship or persecution, we should have the boldness of faith!

Lastly, Paul tasks Timothy with “rightly dividing the word of truth.” Timothy needed to be able to accurately handle the word of God for his ministry, and he needed to be able to discern between false teaching and right preaching. This is so important in our day as well! If we are able to diligently help our kids hide God’s word in their hearts, then they too will be able to share that with others and not be fooled by the wrong doctrine.
