What Does God Is Dope Mean

“God is so dope.” I hear that phrase a lot. “God is the homie.” These are phrases I continuously hear Christians use in the modern church to describe our God. At first, I thought nothing of it. It didn’t seem like a big deal to me until God began to open my eyes.

I did a youth lesson last year, and we discussed how you couldn’t take a word with negative origins and make it positive. Some may not agree with what I am saying, but nevertheless, I welcome respectful arguments.

If you look at the word dope, according to dictionary.com, when dope is used as a noun, it means “any thick liquid or pasty preparation, as a lubricant, used in preparing a surface.” When dope is used as a verb in a sentence, it means “to affect with dope or drugs (usually followed by up or out):” or ” to give a drug to (an athlete or horse), so as to affect performance in a race or other competition.” The slang term for dope is “to take drugs.”

Now repeat the phrase “God is dope.” Are we saying God is like a thick liquid or pasty preparation? Are we saying God is like drugs? How can we associate our Holy, Magnificent, Amazing, Wonderful, Awesome God with such language?

It might seem small to you, but Christians look again. In today’s society, we change the meaning of words to fit our fleshly desires. I am guilty of this as well. Bad means good, and fyah (aka fire) means awesome. The phrase “I’m dead” means I’m dying of laughter. I could write more and more, but the point is, we try to change the language. But we can’t use that language to describe God.

Look at how God describes us. He says we’re the apple of his eye. God calls us a peculiar people and a royal priesthood. God said we’re made in His own image, and He calls us friends.

Clean up your language when you talk about the Almighty God. I’ve done it, and I am still doing it. It is a learning process. Learn to be conscious about how you talk about your God because He only calls us the best. The language He uses is thoughtful and purposeful. When you are down, you can go back into the word and read how important you are to Jesus.

Let’s clean it up and ask the Holy Spirit to give you the words. Ask Jesus to help you and then apply it to your life. Make every effort to address God with reverence and respect. Let’s not be hip with the world. Let’s be in oneness with the Lord.

I can certainly take a deeper dive into this because I’ve only touched the surface. But one thing I know is God is NOT dope. My God is awesome. He is amazing, and He is wonderful.
