What Does The Bible Say About Fraternities And Sororities

This post is all about the dangers of unknowingly taking ungodly oaths

Hey friend! I’m so happy that you’re here on this post! You are most welcome. 🙏🏽

As I begin, I want to say that this post is not a condemnation but rather information that I hope will expose the deceptions and dangers of unknowingly taking oaths.❤️ God has been speaking to me about oaths (traditional or tribal oaths) and, most recently, about Greek sororities or fraternities.

As you will find as you read more…oaths are binding agreements. When you make an oath, you are promising to do something or not do something. This can be a problem if you take an oath to something that goes against what God says.

Christians must be aware of the dangers of ungodly oaths. Why? Because some organizations often require initiates to take oaths and perform rituals that are against Biblical teachings. Sometimes, these groups are disguised as harmless social clubs or charities.

It is important to do your research before joining any organization to ensure that it doesn’t clash with that which is of God. In this blog post, I will discuss the dangers of these oaths and provide steps for evaluating whether a society is not of God.

Ready? Let’s begin…

Why people join these organizations

There are many reasons to join a sorority or fraternity, but here are five reasons:

1. Friendship and networking opportunities with like-minded individuals.

2. Leadership development and training.

3. Increased social circle and support system.

4. Scholarship opportunities.

5. Career networking.

7 dangers of joining these organizations

Here are the dangers of joining these organizations and taking oaths:

  1. You may be asked or frequently tempted to do something that goes against your beliefs.
  2. You could be sworn to secrecy about things that you know are wrong.
  3. You may be required to take part in rituals or activities that are of pagan nature.
  4. You could be pressured into doing things that you would not normally do, such as engaging in questionable activities.
  5. You may be required to put your loyalty to the organization above everything else, including God (this is a form of idolatry).
  6. You could be asked to compromise your beliefs or values in order to advance within the organization.
  7. You may be isolated from family and friends who are not part of the organization.

Ungodly initiation phrases

Do you know what your fraternity or sorority’s ritual book says? If not, you may want to take a look.

I looked at some initiation phrases that are recited during induction ceremonies of some of these organizations. These phrases can be found in their “ritual books.” (This is exactly what they are called!)

Here are some sorority/fraternity phrases that concern me:

  • “We firmly resolve ourselves to a lifetime of service to the sisterhood/ fraternity.”
  • “I will never reveal anything about our rituals, ceremonies, or secrets.”
  • “To our founders, we bow.”
  • “I pledge my undying loyalty to the sisterhood/ fraternity.”
  • “I will always support the sisterhood/ fraternity, no matter what.”
  • “I will obey the sisterhood/ fraternity’s rules without question.”
  • “I will always put the sisterhood/ fraternity first.”

There are also some phrases that I didn’t include that are taken from scripture and they replace the name of God with that of the organization. (Basically twisting scripture and blasphemous in nature!)

All in all, I will not go into detail about why each phrase concerns me. If you are a Bible-believing Christian, I know your spiritual antennae are already way up!

If you are a member of a Greek organization, I encourage you to read your ritual book and make sure that you are comfortable with the pledges that you are making or have already made. Remember, we are called to love God first and foremost, not an organization.

What does the bible say about sororities and fraternities

Although the Bible doesn’t explicitly talk about these organizations, here are a few verses that I want to highlight:

In Matthew 22:37, Jesus says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Nowhere in the Bible does it say that we should pledge our loyalty to anything or anyone other than God.

In Matthew 16:26, Jesus says, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” We are called to put God first in our lives, not an organization. Let us be careful about things that may ultimately cost us.

In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” We are not to blindly obey rules, but to follow God’s commands out of love.

In Matthew 12:30, Jesus says, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” So if we are for an ungodly organization first, we are truly against God.

In fact, in 1 Corinthians 3:9, we are told, “For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.” So we cannot pledge to an organization on a “no matter what” basis. We cannot put an organization 1st before God, especially when we are co-workers in God’s service!

12 steps to help you evaluate a society that is not of God

spiritual dangers of greek organizations

Christians should be careful about unknowingly signing up for membership in a secret society. If you are considering joining an organization, take the time to do your research. Make sure that the group is not involved in any activities that would go against your Christian beliefs.

Here are steps to help you evaluate a society that is not of God:

1. Membership requirements

Often, these organizations will have membership requirements that conflict with Christian values. If a society has any questionable membership requirements, please reconsider.

2. Look at the oath of secrecy

Many organizations require members to take an oath of secrecy, promising not to reveal the secrets; if an organization requires you to take such an oath, pause and pray about it.

3. Evaluate a society by its fruits

Societies that are of God will produce good fruit, while those that are not will produce bad fruit. To determine whether an organization is of God, look at the fruit it produces in the lives of its members. If the society is leading members away from God, it is not of God.

4. Check the group’s social media

Check the group’s website and social media accounts. Make sure that their mission and values align with your own.

5. Historical facts

Research the group’s history. Find out if they have ever been involved in illegal or unethical activities.

6. Talk with current members

Ask around. Talk to people who are familiar with the group and see what they have to say about it. Ask them about their experience with the group and find out if they have any concerns.

7. Consult with Christians

Another step is to consult with other Christians. Talk to your pastor, elders, or other mature believers who can give you wise counsel.

8. Review paperwork

Make sure you understand the group’s rules and requirements before signing any paperwork. Most of the time, these documents and “ritual books,” as they call them, are available online.

9. Pray and ask for guidance

Ask God to guide you in your decision and give you wisdom. Pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit. Ask God whether or not the organization is something that you should be involved in.

10. Evaluate if principles are contrary to the word of God

Test the organization’s teachings against the Bible. Any organization that is not of God will ultimately teach things contrary to God’s Word.

11. Think of consequences

Consider the consequences of joining the organization. Ask yourself what would happen if your involvement in the organization compromised your Christian witness.

12. Deliberate

Make a decision. After prayerfully considering all of the above factors, you will need to decide whether or not to join the organization.

What happens when you do join…

First, remember that you can always say no! You are not obligated to join any organization, no matter what the benefits may be.

However, if you do decide to join, do so with your eyes wide open and be prepared to stand firm in your faith. Remember that as a Christian, you should always be on your guard (in everything, this isn’t only regarding this). Remember to be alert and of sober mind as the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (See 1 Peter 5:8)

I would encourage you to pray for discernment and guidance, just as you would in other life situations. Most importantly, open your heart, eyes, and ears to God. Trust me, He will speak to you whatever your decision. ❤️

But… if you have any doubts, it is always best to err on the side of caution. However, if you feel that the risks are too great, then it is probably best to steer clear altogether. There are many other organizations that are more in line with Biblical values and will not require you to compromise your faith.

African oaths in traditional ceremonies

Whether taken in ignorance or not, oaths have spiritual implications that can bind us. We must know what we are getting into before making any commitments, especially regarding organizations of this nature.

There are many examples of how oaths have been used throughout history to control people and groups of people. These oaths can have negative spiritual implications that can bind us even if we are unaware of them. In Africa, for example, many traditional ceremonies involve oaths taken without the participants fully understanding what they are agreeing to.

Being African, I can tell you I look back in hindsight and realize how many strange things exist and still exist in the guise of “tradition.” I would go into detail, but being that it is such a sensitive topic… I guess I will reserve that for a future post where I can share in-depth as the Spirit leads. If you have an African friend who is spirit filled, ask, and they will tell you. However, please understand that it varies from tribe, region, etc.

Bottom line- It is important to be cautious of any group, tribal contract, or organization that requires us to take an oath, especially if we do not fully understand what we are agreeing to. Before joining any group, it is essential that we do our research and make sure that it is a safe and healthy environment for us.

Renunciation script for sororities and fraternities

This is just a guideline of what I believe a renunciation script can look like. Feel free to add or modify as the Holy Spirit leads:

I, _______, do hereby renounce all membership in and ties to these ungodly organizations, including but not limited to ______________. I specifically disavow and denounce any and all oaths made to these organizations and any and all pacts or other rituals undertaken in connection with my membership in these organizations. I also renounce any other oaths that I took unknowingly that are contrary to the word of God.

I acknowledge that ungodly organizations are incompatible with the Christian faith. I hereby commit myself to live out my faith openly and transparently, free from any ungodly secrets or hidden agendas. I also renounce any and all allegiance to these organizations and pledge my loyalty to Jesus Christ and His Church.

In addition, I renounce any hold that this organization may have had over my life or destiny. I cut any spiritual ties that were formed due to my involvement in this organization(s).

John 8:36 states, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” I declare that I’m free. The blood of the lamb purchased my life.

Finally, I pledge to use the talents and abilities that God has given me to build up the Church and further His Kingdom, rather than using them for any nefarious or self-serving purposes. I ask God’s forgiveness for my involvement with secret societies, and I commit myself to live a Spirit-filled life.

In the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray, knowing and believing this to be true!

Amen!

And that’s it, folks, dangers of taking ungodly oaths

If you have joined an organization without realizing it was ungodly, don’t fret. You can renounce your membership by following the script above. Just be sure to do your research before joining any future organizations so that you can avoid unknowingly signing up for something that goes against your Christian beliefs. And always remember: when in doubt, ask God for guidance! He will never lead you astray.

Lastly, there are certain details about this topic that will be better in a video format. Therefore, I will soon be recording a YouTube video about this as I detail my personal experience. I will post it once I’m done recording.

Hugs!
