What Feels Like A Pussy

Devon says:

Somebody sent a private message asking, “What does it feel like to have a vagina?” and here is the answer that I sent them.

Fair warning for a lot of talk about penetrative sex throughout this post…

To the touch, the inside of the vagina feels just about exactly like the inside of your cheek, except for the G spot (which is on the “top” side of the vagina, that is to say, closer to your stomach than your butt) and the cervix (the part where the vagina meets the uterus), which are both harder/more dense than the rest of the vagina. To the touch, the G spot and cervix are pretty similar to the roof of your mouth.

Oftentimes, folks feel a sharp pain with vaginal penetration- this is not always the case though, and it generally only happens when someone is mentally uncomfortable / not ready / or not “warmed up” (no foreplay). Here’s a link with more info about vaginismus (warning for cissexist language). The vagina can also bleed a small amount during/after sex, if penetration is continued through pain/physical discomfort.

When most people who were born with vaginas are sexually aroused, and also just sometimes at random times, mucus comes out of the vagina, and it’s sometimes hard to tell whether it’s mucus or a little bit of pee (without looking). This vaginal discharge varies based on where someone is in their menstrual cycle. Here’s a link with a lot more detail about that (again, warning for cissexist language).

I personally began to have vaginal discharge a little less than two years before I got my first period, if I remember correctly. It must have been a gradual thing, because I remember noticing that I had discharge and that I didn’t use to, but I don’t remember worrying about it or being confused at all about it (even though I had absolutely Zero adequate sex education).

Generally, if someone doesn’t have an infection, there is not a ton of vaginal discharge- for me there’s never enough to soak through my underwear or even to notice without paying attention to it, unless I’m literally about to have sex or having sex / doing other Sexy Activities. Even though I have a normal (I think?) amount of vaginal discharge during sex, I still use lubricant if I’m being penetrated, because it’s uncomfortable / slightly painful if there’s not enough discharge, and better safe than sorry.

People who have vaginas constructed through surgery (here’s a link on vaginoplasty) generally don’t experience vaginal discharge, and would use lubricant during sex if they’re being penetrated. The exception to this is if tissue is used from the colon to create the vagina, but the majority of people who have vaginoplasties have the penile inversion method instead.

(For people born with vaginas) the vagina is made up of muscle tissue, and it can be voluntarily moved, to a degree- for me, it feels exactly the same as moving my anus (not defecating, just like moving/flexing the anus, if that makes sense). Except that I can feel the movement of my vagina a tiny bit “further up” into my body, because the vagina is about 3-4 inches deep, and I can only feel my anus moving closer to the surface/skin. Kegels (that’s a wikipedia link, also with cissexist language) are an exercise strengthen the pelvic floor, and they can be done with the vagina and/or the urethra.

Warning for menstruation talk / graphic description of blood, for the rest of the post:

When I’m menstruating, a small amount of blood comes out of my vagina for the first two days (probably a teaspoon each day). This is enough to soak through my underwear, and also through my pants if I don’t notice it right away and put on a pad. For the next three days, my period is “heavier,” and is probably closer to one or two tablespoons each day. If I’m not wearing a pad, as soon as blood starts flowing it soaks through my pants.

During my period, blood flows out when I laugh, cough, sneeze, or stand up after sitting/lying down for a little while. It also just flows out at random times throughout the day. It’s not just like liquid blood that would come out with an injury, because it mixes together with vaginal discharge/mucus as well, and blood clots (similar to the consistency of jello or jelly) can come out as well.

The vagina itself doesn’t hurt during my period, even during penetrative sex. Sex is a lot messier during menstruation, because of all the blood of course, but besides that it’s the same.

The uterus is what hurts during menstruation, when someone gets cramps. This is felt in the area below your belly button. I (luckily) have never gotten bad cramps, and usually just feel uncomfortable and like annoying pressure in that area during menstruation. I usually have a small amount of pain in that area the day before my period and for the first day of my period, that feels similar to indigestion for me (except less severe and in a lower area of the stomach).

Cramps can be partially relieved with pain medication (like ibuprofen or aleve) or something warm/hot like an electric heating pad or hot water bottle held against the lower stomach.

People with PCOS, endometriosis, and other conditions will feel much more severe pain during their period. My sister has PCOS, and before she started taking birth control pills, she would get such bad cramps that she couldn’t stand up or move positions without crying from the pain. Probably the majority of people who menstruate get cramps worse than mine but not as bad as my sister. I don’t know what worse cramps feel like but you can probably find accounts online.
