Discover the Right Way to Wear a Baseball Glove

Are you a beginner in the game of baseball? Have you ever wondered about the proper way to wear a batting glove? I remember the days when I first ventured into the sport and encountered a common question among many players: what hand should you wear a batting glove on?

Traditionally, baseball players wear batting gloves on both hands when hitting. However, if a player prefers to wear only one glove, it is typically worn on their bottom hand, which is the hand closest to the knob of the bat. This practice can be confusing, especially if you are also learning golf at the same time. In golf, players wear one glove, usually on their upper hand, which is quite different from baseball.

Always Use Batting Gloves on Both Hands

When you purchase a pair of batting gloves, you will notice that it comes with two gloves – one for each hand. This is because it is widely accepted in baseball and softball that wearing a batting glove on both hands is the norm. Although it may have been common to wear only one batting glove in the past, the perception has since changed. Nowadays, it is extremely rare to see a player wearing only one glove while hitting.

There are several reasons why players tend to wear batting gloves on both hands. Apart from the added grip they provide, batting gloves also offer a layer of protection against blisters and potential injuries from pitches. Additionally, they help keep players’ hands warm during colder games. In all my years of playing baseball, I cannot think of any benefits to wearing just one batting glove.

Which Hand to Wear One Batting Glove?

Although wearing a batting glove on both hands is the standard practice, some players may choose to wear only one. In this case, the general rule is to wear the glove on the bottom hand, which is the hand closest to the knob of the bat. Right-handed hitters wear the glove on their left hand, while left-handed hitters wear it on their right hand. This general rule also applies to golfers, with right-handed players wearing a glove on their left hand.

However, in all my years of playing baseball, I have rarely witnessed a player using just one batting glove while hitting. Most players either wear batting gloves on both hands or forgo them entirely.

The No Batting Glove Option

Contrary to popular belief, there are baseball players who choose not to wear batting gloves at all. Some players believe that they do not derive any benefit from wearing them and prefer the feel of the bat in their hands. Others rely on alternative methods such as using bat grips like Lizard Skin. While it may seem unconventional, it is more common to see players without batting gloves than those wearing only one glove.

While some may question the necessity of batting gloves, those who use them cannot imagine stepping up to bat without their trusted gloves.

One Batting Glove While Playing Defense

Although it is uncommon to see players wearing just one batting glove when hitting, it is not unheard of to wear one underneath a fielding glove while playing defense. In fact, this is a practice I have embraced myself. Wearing a batting glove underneath the fielding glove helps alleviate discomfort caused by sweaty hands and provides better grip while trying to field a ball.

For me, the solution has been to have two separate pairs of batting gloves: one high-quality pair for hitting and a cheaper pair for fielding. I personally recommend the Bruce Bolt batting gloves, which I find to be exceptional. If you are in the market for a new pair, I suggest checking out my review on Bruce Bolt batting gloves.

Finding the right way to wear a baseball glove is crucial for your performance on the field. Whether you choose to wear batting gloves on both hands, only wear one, or opt for no gloves at all, finding what works best for you is key.
