Every aspiring American Idol contestant dreams of hearing the words, “You’re going to Hollywood!” This life-changing phrase has launched the careers of renowned artists like Carrie Underwood and Scotty McCreery. And it was this very phrase that Colt Glover, a marketing junior at Oklahoma State University Spears School of Business and a Texas native, got to hear at the age of 21, during the show’s 21st season.

Glover’s journey began when his college roommate encouraged him to pursue music seriously. They started by posting videos on TikTok, showcasing Glover’s raw talent and passion for red dirt country music. These videos caught the attention of talent producers from American Idol, earning him a spot on the show.

With his unique fusion of smooth soul and rasp, Glover captivated both the judges and viewers. Lionel Richie described his voice as a combination of Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, and Marcus Mumford, praising his emotional maturity and ability to make every word resonate with the audience.
During his audition in Las Vegas, Glover performed “Rock, Salt, and Nails” by Flatt and Scruggs alongside his college buddy, Jevyn Lester, on the guitar. Despite his initial disbelief, Glover impressed the judges, particularly Katy Perry, who declared him the best country singer they had seen so far. Perry even predicted that Glover would make it to the top 10 in the competition.
While Perry’s praise was exhilarating, it was Richie’s constructive criticism that resonated with Glover the most. Richie, having experienced success as a member of the Commodores before embarking on a solo career, advised Glover to use American Idol as a steppingstone into the music industry.
In the first round of Hollywood Week, Glover chose to focus on improving his stage presence, coached by Justin Guarini, a former American Idol contestant and audition anxiety coach. After a day of coaching, Glover took the stage and received a standing ovation, especially from Lionel Richie, who was thrilled with his performance.

Unfortunately, despite his impressive talent, Glover’s journey on American Idol came to an end during the group performance phase. While most of his fellow contestants from his group made it to the top 26, Glover didn’t advance further. However, this setback hasn’t dampened Glover’s spirit.
Since the show, Glover has been approached with various opportunities and has formed close friendships with many of his fellow contestants. While he continues to cheer them on in the competition, he plans to focus on his marketing degree at OSU and will release four new original songs in the summer of 2023. One of these songs, titled “One Person Bed,” was co-written with fellow American Idol contestant John Wayne Hatfield.
In the long term, Glover envisions moving to Nashville with his newfound American Idol friends to pursue a career in music while utilizing his marketing degree to market himself in the industry. As Luke Bryan aptly put it, Glover is about to embark on a “country boy amusement park rocket ship,” full of thrilling adventures in Vegas and L.A.
Colt Glover may not have achieved victory on American Idol, but his journey has only just begun. With his remarkable talent, determination, and supportive network, there’s no doubt that this rising star will make waves in the music industry.
