What Happens If U Smoke Shrooms

Can You Smoke Shrooms

Shrooms and magic mushrooms are slang terms for a type of fungi called psilocybin mushrooms that many people consume to experience hallucinogenic effects.[1] When you use shrooms, you might experience altered thinking, emotions, sense of time, and see or hear things that are not really there. Most people who abuse shrooms do so by eating the dried mushrooms or brewing them into a tea.

While you can crush dried shrooms up into a powder and smoke them, it probably won’t produce the same effects as eating or drinking them.

There is little research done on smoking shrooms, which makes it difficult to say for sure whether you will have a psychedelic experience. However, there are some risks involved with smoking shrooms such as the general dangers of breathing smoke into your lungs, inhaling mold spores, and suffering from the adverse effects of psilocybin mushrooms.

What are the Effects of Shrooms?

Psilocybin mushrooms, often referred to as magic mushrooms, contain compounds like psilocybin and psilocin. These compounds interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perceptions, changes in mood, and a profound shift in consciousness. Traditionally, these mushrooms are ingested orally, whether eaten raw, brewed in tea, or dried and consumed.

When you eat dried shrooms or brew them into tea, they can produce a wide range of side effects, including hallucinations and distortions in perception and time.

The common effects of magic mushrooms include:[1]

  • Feelings of euphoria and wellbeing
  • Random laughter
  • Changes in consciousness, mood, thought, and perception
  • Dilated pupils
  • Visual and auditory hallucinations
  • Stomach aches, nausea, and vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Increased body temperature and respiration
  • Excessive sweating or chills

While some people have a positive experience when taking shrooms, others struggle with what is called a “bad trip.” Instead of developing euphoria and enjoying the hallucinations, people who have a bad trip might feel anxious or paranoid and be frightened by the changes in their perception. Oftentimes, people have a bad trip when they are in an environment they are not comfortable in or are dealing with negative emotions before taking the shrooms.

Can You Smoke Shrooms?

While it is possible to smoke shrooms, there has not been research on whether smoking psilocybin causes any effects. Most people report experiencing slight hallucinogenic effects, if any. Unlike substances such as cannabis or tobacco, the active compounds in mushrooms, like psilocybin, aren’t heat-stable. In other words, smoking shrooms may only produce the negative effects of smoking a substance instead of the high you are looking for.

Risks of Smoking Psilocybin Mushrooms

While smoking shrooms might not provide you with an intense psychedelic experience, there are risks associated with this method of consumption, including:

Dangers of Smoking

Smoking shrooms can cause the same negative side effects anyone experiences when smoking a substance. Any type of smoke is bad for your health. Smoke contains harmful toxins that can damage your lung tissue and blood vessels, and smoking psilocybin mushrooms frequently can lead to irritation and inflammation as well as dangerous conditions like lung cancer.

If you mix your shrooms with another drug like tobacco or marijuana, you will also deal with the adverse effects of smoking those substances.

Mold Spores

Mushrooms are fungi that grow in damp conditions, so they might have mold on them. When you smoke shrooms that contain mold, you run the risk of allowing those mold spores to travel to your lungs. Inhaling certain types of mold increases your risk of lung inflammation and dangerous infections.

Even further, if you have a mold allergy, a pre-existing lung condition, or a compromised immune system, inhaling mold spores can cause serious and even life-threatening health problems.

Adverse Effects from Shrooms

Smoking shrooms may cause adverse side effects, including:

  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Increased body temperature and excessive sweating
  • Muscle weakness
  • Uncoordinated movement
  • Changes in mood
  • Anxiety, fear, or paranoia

Since there is no way to know how smoking shrooms will affect you, it is best to avoid doing so altogether.

Find Help for Psilocybin Mushroom Abuse

If you or a loved one frequently abuses shrooms by eating, drinking, or smoking them, you should seek professional help. Long-term abuse of psilocybin mushrooms can lead to adverse psychological effects, including the development of a condition known as hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder (HPPD).

Thankfully, drug rehab programs can help you overcome your substance use disorder while treating you for the lasting psychological effects of psilocybin mushroom abuse. With a combination of evidence-based behavioral therapy, group counseling, and relapse prevention planning, you can build a strong foundation of recovery to rely on.
