What Is A Lollipop Moment

There are profound moments in life when one experiences a Lollipop Moment. A lollipop moment is defined as a moment where someone said something or did something that fundamentally made your life better?

If you have never heard of this. Take 6 minutes to listen to Drew Dudley’s TED talk about lollipop moments.

As leaders, I am tempted to ask each of you what lollipop moments that you have had that have impacted someone else’s life but chances are you probably wouldn’t know. That is what makes it a lollipop moment. Leadership is about the small moments when you unintentionally impact someone’s life.

I don’t know whether I’ve had a lasting impact on anyone. I hope that I have. I know that there are others who have had a profound impact on me. Thinking back, I don’t know that they have realized that their leadership has had such a lasting impression on me and my career.

Early in my career, I spent time on a high-profile project for my company. My supervisor spent time talking with each member of the project team learning about what issues they each were having. One Friday afternoon, after a few months of getting to know the team and the project, he pulled me into his office. He told me that he would like to promote me to the team manager.

I was shocked. This wasn’t anything I was prepared for. I wasn’t aiming for a promotion. He explained that after talking with everyone, I was the only employee that talked about my concerns for the rest of the team. And that whether I knew it or not, the team was coming to me for questions and direction. As a leader he saw something in me I hadn’t seen in myself.

I’m sure that moment wasn’t anything out of the ordinary for him. It was his job. He was good at evaluating and leading people. For me, it was life-changing.

My boss didn’t realize – that ordinary Friday afternoon became MY lollipop moment.

That instant put me on a path of managing people and leading teams. I try to be a good leader and I know I’ll always be working to improve. I simply enjoy working with, developing and empowering teams. It’s probably the one thing I get the most satisfaction from. I’ll never go back to a role where I’m not working with people. It was a life-changer.

In short, Take the time to acknowledge the leaders who have made a lasting impact on your life. I have been lucky to have had a great boss that has shaped me. If there are other leaders who have made your lives better, let them know it. Let’s celebrate leadership.
