What Is A Mops Group

A group called “Mothers of Preschoolers” is more commonly known by its acronym M.O.P.S. But what is MOPS, anyway? MOPS is an organization that was established 45 years ago by a group of young mothers who wanted a venue for gathering and sharing their parenting journeys.

Today, MOPS has expanded worldwide to equip and encourage moms in more than 60 countries. Our local chapter meets the first and third Fridays of each month at Honey Lake Assembly of God Church.

There are already so many different projects requiring a parent’s time, you may wonder why you should add an obligation?

For starters, becoming a MOPS member is not a time consuming obligation. It is a refreshing opportunity for both mother and child.

MOPS.org explains, “Here at MOPS, we gather and support moms. We believe in the simple but revolutionary idea that remarkable things happen when moms come together, face to face. That’s why we rally women to come together in their own neighborhoods and help each other through this thing called motherhood, one gathering at a time.”

Most would agree that if there were ever a need for a support group, the calling to motherhood qualifies. The challenges are not limited to sleep deprivation, potty training and sibling rivalry — although each of these topics is worthy of its own support group.

However, the coming together of mothers with preschoolers addresses another common aspect of parenting young children: loneliness.

Experts at verywellfamily.com elaborate on the subject: “No matter how many children you have, it’s very easy and normal to feel lonely, even though you have kids in the house.”

For many moms the reality of loneliness is not a revelation; however, it can be helpful to know you are not, dare I say – alone.

Each MOPS chapter has its own style. Our local chapter has these goals for 2020: “No more fearing what people might think or say. No more letting fear paralyze us or allowing concern about the future to rob us of the present. This year we will bring our courage to life. Learn to calm our anxieties and surrender the need for control. This is the year of faith over fear.”

And this, “We will meet our neighbors, learn the name of the cashier at the grocery store and invite other MOPS members over for dinner. We need other people and they need us. Meeting people takes some vulnerability, but it also means being known, belonging and helping others to feel the same.”

What does all of this awesomeness look like at a MOPS meeting? Each meeting typically includes a teaching session, snacks, small group discussion, creative activity and fellowship time among the moms while children are lovingly cared for in the Moppets program.
