What Is A Wet Clutch

If you’ve heard the terms dry clutch and wet clutch, you may be confused because having a wet clutch doesn’t inherently sound good. However, it’s not quite that simple. Both dry and wet clutches have benefits, so finding out which one works best for you requires learning what each option brings to your bike. If you’re looking at dry clutch vs. wet clutch vehicles, what’s the difference? Learn what separates these components by reading below.

Wet Clutch

First, let’s define what a wet clutch is. As you may assume when hearing the name, the wet clutch is covered in a liquid, but we’re not talking about covering the clutch in water. Wet clutches are covered in oil to provide cooling to the clutch plates. The purpose of this is to help the clutch components last longer by keeping them from reaching excessive temperatures. Beyond that, it serves the same function as a normal clutch, which is connecting your transmission to your engine.

Dry Clutch

So what does that mean for a dry clutch? Like the wet clutch, a dry option will still provide that connection between your engine and transmission. The key difference between the dry and wet clutch is the oil. A dry clutch doesn’t have the oil covering it. Thus, the dry clutch won’t have the same cool temperatures as a wet one.

Power and Performance

When comparing a dry clutch and a wet clutch, discussing what the difference is requires looking at more than the presence of the oil alone. A dry clutch has a reputation for producing less drag on the engine. This drag can result in less power from the engine, although it doesn’t mean the engine won’t function.

The right choice, as it is with many aftermarket parts, relies on the performance output you desire. If you want to make any performance adjustments to your ride, don’t forget to browse the clutch replacement kits available now. If your bike, car, or another vehicle isn’t performing to your standards, the right kit can solve the issue quickly.
