Biomes are various types of environments in the game. They are based on real-world environments like deserts, forests, plans, beaches, and mountains. More than 60 biomes are present in the Minecraft world, and they often overlap. Since Minecraft maps are blocky and randomly generated for the most part, a setting called “Biome Blend” aims to make the process of one biome turning into another much smoother and prettier. Biome blend makes your game prettier at the cost of performance
Minecraft can be an incredibly immersive game, but sometimes, the blocky graphics and unrealistic transitions between the biomes can completely ruin that feeling. Think about the last time you’ve seen desert sharply transitioning into a jungle, it feels like a straight line is calculated and drawn in the ground without taking realism into account whatsoever.

This is where the biome blend setting comes in. Biome blend allows various different biomes to blend into each other by adjusting environmental colors. Instead of transitioning sharply from dull yellowish green into the vibrant green of the jungle, you will see the colors gradually mixing until you are fully immersed in a different biome altogether.
Does biome blend affect your FPS?
Biome blend does affect your FPS in general, the higher your biome blend setting is the slower your overall performance will be and you will see a significant decrease in FPS both while you’re near the transitioning areas and out of them. Biomes can be blended as 3×3, 5×5, 7×7, 9×9, 11×11, 13×13, and 15×15 blocks, the higher your setting is, or in other words the more the blocks blend, the more severely this will affect your performance.
However, just like with the mipmap setting, if you’re playing on a higher-end device you will barely notice the difference and your game will look better overall.

If you generally struggle to maintain steady and decent FPS in Minecraft and you’re constantly finding yourself decreasing your rendering distance, graphics, smooth lighting, and various other video settings, you should probably leave biome blend turned off.
If you’re PC struggles with some higher-end settings it’s perfectly fine with running the game on medium settings at high enough FPS anywhere from 3×3 biome blend to 7×7 biome blend should be fine and won’t affect you in the slightest. Everything after 7×7 up to 15×15 should be reserved for higher-end devices that don’t really have to “optimize” their graphics to maintain steady and fast performance.
How to change the biome blend setting in Minecraft?
Biome blend setting is changed at the video settings tabs that can be accessed both from the main menu and while you’re in the game. To do it, follow these steps:
- If you are in the main menu go to options, if you are in the game press “esc” and go to options. Click on the Video Settings.
- Click on the video settings
- Navigate to the biome blend tab (it’s the second option)
- Adjust your biome blend levels according to what your hardware can handle.
