What Is Black And Blue And Red All Over Answers

God wasn’t attracted to you and didn’t choose you because you were big and important—the fact is, there was almost nothing to you. He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors. God stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of (slavery:abuse). Deuteronomy 7:8 (MSG)

So goes a child’s riddle, “What is black and blue and read all over?” The answer> A Zebra reading a newspaper! Said with gusto and a smile.

When I think of this, it is anything but a riddle to me. This is how I felt as a child. Black and blue from my mother’s touch and red from the using. The answer I would think of as that child when this riddle was asked of me was, “Me.”

An internal portrait of myself standing alone, voiceless, forgotten. I so remember saying just this in anger to my first counselor. Leaving this very riddle written out upon his desk, when I felt he was ignoring me.

I share this because healing isn’t all about the victory, no there is the path to it. Just as our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, journey the road to the cross so must we follow Him. Take up our crosses, align them with His, that God redeem them. Christ death on the cross, our redemption, followed by His resurrection. Our hope His sacrifice.

God is redeeming my cross too. He desires to do so for all of our crosses. In doing so the weight is lifted, purpose is found and new life gifted. The past crucified as the present is resurrected.

Past me was black and blue and red all over.

Present me stands before a backdrop of black that the transformation be visible, a clean slate sort of black. I see the mighty hand of my Abba as He casts the colors forth. A new sky painted now upon my life, deep blue brushed upon this slate, vast and shouting freedom. I stand there looking to these heavens, in awe and wonder, full of expectation. Anything but lonely, full of the Spirit of God, a brilliance within. “What of red, Papa, I ask?”

His answer?

A new heart. Ever so gently, full of fatherly love, he returns mine to me. The holes of the abuse now filled, infused of the blood of Christ death.

My heart resurrected, each beat His life-giving blood.

What is, “Black and blue and red all over?”

“Redemption, Abba style.”
