What is Club Volleyball?

Club volleyball provides a competitive level of play for girls who are interested in improving their skills and gaining the experience necessary to play in high school and beyond.

Club volleyball:

  • helps improve player’s skills through practice with a selected team.
  • Provides an opportunity for tournament play against teams from all over the region and possibly the nation.
  • Provides an opportunity to meet new friends and play with athletes with similar goals.
  • Helps develop social skills and teaches athletes about competitiveness and how to deal with both winning and losing.
  • provides the best way to help players get collegiate exposure.

Common Club Questions:

What are the ages for players who want to participate in club volleyball?

  • Many clubs offer developmental programs for girls as young as 8.
  • Texas Outlaws Volleyball currently has teams for players ages 12-18
  • Texas Outlaws Volleyball follows the age classification guidelines of USAV.

How are team formed?

  • Teams are formed based on the results of tryouts. Players try out for a spot in their age group and teams are formed according to positions.

How many players are on a team?

  • Teams are made of 8-12 players.

How many practices do teams have per week?

  • Teams will practice 2-3 times per week.

How many tournaments will there be?

  • Teams will compete in 7-8 local tournaments (in the Houston area).
  • Regional (Travel) teams will play in additional out-of-town tournaments.

When does club season start and end?

  • Club season starts in November and ends in late April or early May.

Do all teams travel to tournaments?

  • Only our Regional and National teams will travel out of town for tournaments.
  • Local teams will play in the Houston area only.

Can I play for more than one club?

  • No, if you commit to a club you have to stay with that club for entire season.

What are the fees for most club teams?

  • Club fees vary from club to club. Fees can range from $1,500 – $5,000 per season.

How are tournaments set up?

  • At a club tournament, teams from different areas get together and play each other in the best out of 3 sets to 25 points in pool play. The best teams advance to bracket playoff games. Teams usually will play a minimum of three matches in one day. Most local team tournaments are held in the Houston area and regional and national tournaments can be local, across the state, or even out of state. Tournaments are sanctioned by USAV. Our region is the USAV Lone Star Region. Bid tournaments are for all teams wanting to qualify for a national tournament.

How long do tournaments last?

  • Players need to plan on being at a tournament from 8am to 5-7pm. Sometimes tournaments are divided into morning and afternoon waves. A morning wave will last from approximately 8:00am-3:00pm, while an afternoon wave may start at 3:00pm and may last until 9:00pm.

Do the teams play in USAV National qualifiers?

  • Only teams who qualify through the regional bid championships or a USAV Bid tournament earn a chance to play at the USAV Nationals. A team seeking a national bid will have an extended season into June and will pay additional fees for practices and the National tournament.
