What Is Deij

At Lancaster Friends School, we respect and value the individuality of our students, faculty, and staff. Our Community Dress Agreement (CDA) is crafted with the understanding that everyone in our community is expected to honor the same policies. The CDA was thoughtfully named and created to foster an environment of learning and focus. We will review this agreement on a yearly basis to make sure that our policy is responsive. As this policy is put into place on August 3, 2022, it will be reviewed on or before August 3, 2023.

Students, faculty, staff, and other community members such as volunteers, must wear:

  • Clothing that covers the body from chest to legs

  • Shoes

  • Activity-appropriate clothing, such as protective gear for science or closed-toed shoes for biking during P.E.

Students, faculty, staff, and other community members such as volunteers, are encouraged to wear:

  • Clothing that represents their personality, likes, and dislikes

  • Clothing that reflects or promotes their personal religious beliefs

  • Clothing that reflects their self-identified gender

  • Clothing that makes them feel most comfortable

Students, faculty, staff, and other community members such as volunteers, may not wear:

  • Clothing that depicts profanity, hate speech, drugs, alcohol, or other violent or disturbing imagery

  • Clothing with camouflage print

  • Clothing designed to expose the chest, abdomen, rear, or any undergarments

Holding each other accountable:

Since all community members are subject to the agreement, students, faculty, and staff work together to hold each other accountable. Everyone is encouraged to speak up with respect when a fellow community member is not honoring the agreement.

  • If a student has an issue with the dress of another student, they should speak with a teacher or adult who can help them address their concerns

  • If a student has an issue with the dress of a teacher, they are welcomed to speak to that teacher directly or to another adult who can help them address their concerns

  • Teachers and adults will speak directly to students who are found to not be honoring the dress agreement. Teachers and staff will also use their best judgment in enforcing the dress code, ensuring that all students are treated equitably regardless of gender identification or expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body type/size, religion, disability, socioeconomic status, and personal style.

Any community member found to be not honoring our dress agreement will be asked to change or not wear that item of clothing again. Repeatedly not honoring the agreement will result in further discussion and problem-solving conversations.
