What Is Desiccant

In most product packaging today contains 1 desiccant package to preserve to prolong the product’s life. There are many different types. So what is a desiccant? Is it possible to store products for such a long time? How do I know which one is good?

What is desiccant ?

A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance that is used to induce or sustain a state of dryness (desiccation) in its vicinity; it is the opposite of a humectant. Commonly encountered pre-packaged desiccants are solids that absorb water. Desiccants for specialized purposes may be in forms other than solid, and may work through other principles, such as chemical bonding of water molecules. They are commonly encountered in foods to retain crispness. Industrially, desiccants are widely used to control the level of water in gas streams.

Although some desiccants are chemically inert. But others are very reactive and require specialized handling techniques. Therefore, each type is used for different products:

  • Silica Gel is the most common moisture barrier. A white solid, insoluble in water, inert, and non-toxic. Tens of thousands of tons of silica gel are produced annually. Has anti-moisture effect for industries: Electronics, garment, food, food, medicine…
  • Clay Desiccant is used to desiccant in fields such as: medical equipment, electronics, optics, furniture, chemicals, machine parts, food… Used in containers to absorb moisture when moving away, …
  • Calcium chloride salt is often used to prevent moisture for machinery, ships, base metals, steel, iron, metal cans. Or automotive products (car seats, brake pads), electronic and digital equipment…

Measure of moisture absorption

The desiccant effect is: The ratio (or percentage) of the water storage in the desiccant to the mass of the desiccantAnother measure is: The remaining relative humidity of air or other liquid to be dried

Effective moisture resistance depends on the following factors

  • Temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Absolute humidity

Which one is best ?

To some extent, the dehumidifying performance can be accurately described. But most often, choose which desiccant it should be best suited for a given situation based on:

  1. How much do you use
  2. Which form do you use
  3. Conducted based on testing and practical experience.
