What Is Fdoc In College

I love school. I love being in the classroom, having close relationships with my professors, and doing homework. Honestly, and this is a hot take, but I even like doing group projects. The first day of class, or FDOC as we call it here at Furman, is a huge event. There’s nothing like waking up at 7:00 am, making brunch with the roomies, and toasting to a great school year before running our separate ways to class. This is always something I look forward to, however, this year it looked a little different. Spoiler alert, our plastic champagne flutes, and cute new sundresses stayed tucked away. Instead, I was sporting my pajamas all day, ate a bag (yes, a whole bag) of Goldfish for lunch, and cried three times. Although my blog is titled “FDOC: A Breakdown”, it has two different meanings: the first, meaning a rough explanation, and the other meaning a “sudden collapse in one’s mental health”. With that, I’ve provided a rough outline of my day below the photos!

  • This was such a fun brunch! We celebrated a birthday and FDOC all in one.
  • Sophomore year FDOC! My Tri Delta sorority sisters! We had so much fun making breakfast together and getting dressed up before our first day of classes. Lots of love for these girls!

Hour by Hour :

7:00: My alarm went off. Honestly, even my favorite Maggie Rogers song couldn’t get me out of bed. My friends still weren’t on campus, I didn’t have anyone to make brunch with, so I went back to sleep.

7:45: Okay, this time I had to get out of bed, as I have an 8:00 am. I threw a sweatshirt on to at least show some kind of effort and moved to the couch. My roomie was still knocked out, and as we share a bedroom, I had to relocate for my class.

8:00-8:45: My first class! I had graphic design, which I really liked. The class was short because it was the first day, but I got great vibes from the professor. It’s a real bummer we’re online for this class!

9:00: I’m hungry, but I guess I’ll go back to bed because making eggs seems like a whole lot of work right now.

11:00: Good morning for real!! This time, my roomie was out on the couch taking her class, so I pulled out my phone and watched Tik Toks.

1:00: My mom left some Goldfish in the pantry when she moved me in, so that sounds like a delicious lunch.

3:00: More Tik Toks, of course- what else is there to do?

Made this cute Tik Tok with our orientation group!!! SO fun!

As you can see, there wasn’t much happening on FDOC. At one point, my roommate and I sat on our beds and just stared at each other. We simply asked each other, “now what?” This FDOC was unlike anything we had ever experienced. I think this moment was also the first time I got a real-life taste of what this semester was going to look like. I quickly realized that although pre Covid-19 my days were planned down to the minute, this time around I was simply going to have to create my own happiness and be intentional about my plans!

How We Fixed It:

Once we had our pity party and wallowed in the unfortunate outcome of our FDOC, we picked ourselves up and made plans. We took a walk around the lake to get outside and get our steps in- I’m all about closing those Apple Watch rings. After our walk, we went to dinner in the DH with the rest of our friend group. These two things provided some sort of normalcy in our FDOC routine, which ultimately made me a lot happier. I realized that instead of looking at this semester as a loss, I needed to look at it as an opportunity to learn more about myself and what truly makes me happy. Whether that be intentional conversations with friends or biking the Swamp Rabbit trail to grab brunch on a Thursday morning, this semester has required a lot of adapting. However, I’ve learned that change is good and on some days, you just have to create your own sunshine.
